US says has 'proof' Syria's Assad used chemical weapon in Douma

Macron is appearing on national television Thursday to respond to the daily concerns of the French and defend his economic policies

President Trump walks in to speak in the Diplomatic Reception Room of the White House Friday to speak to the nation about the USA military response to Syria's chemical weapon attack on April 7.

Syrian media reported that air defences had hit 13 incoming rockets south of Damascus. "Together, we have sent a clear message to Assad, and his murderous lieutenants, that they should not perpetrate another chemical weapons attack for which they will be held accountable".

"We can not tolerate the trivialisation of the use of chemical weapons, which is an immediate danger for the Syrian people and for our collective security", Mr Macron said.

The strikes targeted several military sites around Damascus and Homs that were used to manufacture chemical weapons.

Trump said the mandate for an allied attack was open-ended, but Pentagon chiefs later said the strikes Friday would be repeated only if Assad took further action that warranted a response. A spokesman for Britain's prime minister said her cabinet agreed it was "highly likely" the regime was responsible.

The U.S. struck the base with 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles targeting runways and hangars.

Many of those killed, activists say, were in the basement of a house, which could be where an intense concentration of the chemical settled. Mattis described a limited, one-time strike created to deter Assad from using chemical weapons again. In another tweet on Thursday, Trump wrote that an attack on Syria "could be very soon or not so soon at all!"

In a reference to the US, he said that it "it would only benefit those who are protected by the ocean and expect to sit there and engage in continuous efforts to stir up the region in order to advance their geopolitical goals". He said it would be "a red line for us".

Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said last week "We call upon. members of the worldwide community to seriously consider the possible consequences of such accusations, threats and especially action [against Syria]".

He said the attack was staged on April 7 to coincide with military action by Syrian government forces, after the rebel group Jaish al-Islam that long controlled Eastern Ghouta carried out shelling of Damascus from April 3 to 6. The United States and Britain have also blamed Syrian President Bashar Assad's government.

Syria ally Russian Federation warned Friday of "consequences" following the launch of US-led strikes against Bashar al-Assad's regime in retaliation for a suspected chemical attack.

"To Iran and to Russian Federation, I ask: 'What kind of a nation wants to be associated with the mass murder of innocent men, women and children?'"

"Russia must decide if it will continue down this dark path, or if it will join with civilized nations as a force for stability and peace", Trump said.

Referring to Assad, Trump said, "These are not the actions of a man".

Trump also delivered a message to Iran and Russian Federation. He also suggested he was examining ways to prevent any strikes from triggering a broader conflict.

In a statement Friday night, May called last weekend's chemical attack "pure horror".

So today, the nations of Britain, France, and the United States of America have marshaled their righteous power against barbarism and brutality.

And he described the Middle East as a "troubled place".

"It is not a decision I have taken lightly", she said on Saturday.

Canada has become the latest to lay the blame for a deadly chemical-weapons attack in Syria last week at Syrian President Bashar Assad's doorstep, despite Russian suggestions to the contrary.

Trump had met earlier with his national security team to discuss the situation in Syria. He says a "combined operation" with France and the United Kingdom is underway.

That assessment appeared to echo President Macron, who said they had "proof" that "at least chlorine" was used in the attack by the regime.

That's according to a source familiar with the president's plans, who was not authorized to speak publicly. The Russian military and the Syrian government said they would facilitate the mission and ensure the inspectors' security.

"We are continuing to assess intelligence and are engaged in conversations with our partners and allies", White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said on April 12 in a statement.

He told Sky News: "If there is proof the regime did it, then the regime must be held responsible".
