US Preparing New Sanctions on Russian Federation over Syria, Haley Says

A surface-to-air missile lit up the sky in Damascus early Saturday morning after President Trump announced airstrikes would be launched to deter the Syrian government for allegedly using chemical weapons

Russian president Vladimir Putin has denounced the missile strikes by the US, France and the United Kingdom as an "act of aggression" that would exacerbate the humanitarian catastrophe in Syria.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, the regime´s top ally, warned that fresh strikes would spark "chaos", but Washington vowed economic sanctions against Moscow rather than further military action.

Global leaders have been reacting to Friday night's air strike in Syria.

Last week, Israeli warplanes were the first to strike inside Syria following the suspected chemical attack.

"Vladimir Putin, in particular, stressed that if such actions committed in violation of the [United Nations] Charter continue, then it will inevitably lead to chaos in worldwide relations", the Russian government said in a statement obtained by the news agency.

The Syrian president's high spirits were matched by displays of jubilation in Damascus, where government supporters took to the streets on Saturday to demonstrate their backing for Assad and express scorn for the strikes.

The United Nations Charter recognizes two justifications for using military force against another country, self-defense or the permission of the Security Council.

"We will work calmly, methodically and professionally, using all opportunities to remove the situation from its current extremely risky political peak".

Kaine said the Syrian operations lack a clear strategy. Gen. Ali Mayhoub said that the Scientific Research Center in Barzeh near Damascus was hit, while three people were injured in Homs when a missile was targeted.

Russian officials described the Syrian President as being in a "good mood" during Sunday's meeting and continuing his work in Damascus.

In the run-up to Trump's decision to carry out the strikes, Jones argued that the chemical attacks that happened earlier in April were staged by Syrian rebels to bait the United States to intervene. Moscow condemned the Western states for refusing to wait for OPCW's findings before attacking. He said that Parliament should have been consulted before the attacks occurred.

"They 100 percent met their objectives", she said on ABC's "This Week".

But in short, the Russians were either unable to (or chose not to) get in the way.

Asked about US-Russia relations, US ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said ties were "very strained" but that the United States still hoped for a better relationship.

Assad "now dictates his own life", Haley said.

Haley, in her Fox News interview, also defended its use as a military term, rather than as a broader political statement.

She said too many governments are ignoring the atrocities in her home country and would like to see Canada take more of a leadership role in ending the conflict.

"I don't say we've ever said it's OK", she said.

"From the point of view of the president, this was aggression and we share this position", TASS quoted lawmaker Sergei Zheleznyak as saying after the meeting.

"All (the U.S.) has achieved by arming the mainly jihadist opposition is the increase of Assad's dependence on Iran and Russia", Glass said.

Longer-term, she said, Trump had three ultimate objectives in Syria: to defeat the Islamic State group, to contain Iranian aggression and to halt the use of "mass chemical weapons".

An AP reporter who went to the Center for Scientific Research on the northeastern edge of Damascus found the three-story building nearly completely destroyed and still smoking hours after it was hit.

Opinion polls suggest most Britons do not support military action.

Internationally, gold and oil are expected to extend gains on Monday, albeit modestly, when the markets open for the first time since the missile attack. "You proved once again, yesterday, that you have a big heart".

Gold has benefited in recent days as a safe-haven asset amid a U.S.

It was over in 70 minutes, and changed nothing, but perhaps also everything. Despite Friday night's small scale use of force, Mercho fears what might happen if the Assad government were to fall.

Sarin had previously appeared to be the threshold for intervention.

Syria's war continues unabated, on the same course.

Russian Federation called for an emergency session of United Nations Security Council on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Pope Francis called on world leaders to renew efforts to bring peace to Syria, saying he was deeply troubled by their failure to agree on a joint plan to end the bloodshed.
