United States preparing new sanctions on Russian Federation over Syria, Haley says

US aggression against Syria undermines UN diplomatic solution – Russian envoy

"The immediate priority is to avert the danger of war", said Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia. France is reported to be one of the strongest backers of a possible strike which Russian Federation strongly opposes.

Russia's Nebenzia called it "a very sad day for the world, for the United Nations, for its Charter which was blatantly, blatantly violated, and for the Security Council which has shirked its responsibilities".

"Our warnings have been left unheard". Of course the Russians want to cast western countries as unsafe adventurists when they themselves rescued the Assad regime in 2015 and have propped up all its vicious actions since then.

For now, Putin has limited his response to calling an urgent meeting of the U.N. Security Council.

The White House says it is continuing to assess intelligence and talk to its allies on how to respond.

She noted that In 2017, Moscow "killed" a Joint Investigative Mechanism, which the United Nations established in 2015 to investigate and assign accountability for chemical weapons use in Syria. And it shows that Washington appears to have succeeded for now in delivering a blow that did not provoke Russian Federation into a military response - even though the degree to which the missile attack hindered Assad's chemical-weapons capability is far from clear.

During his address, President Trump said USA forces were prepared to sustain this response "until the Syrian regime stops its use of prohibited chemical agents" and issued a direct message to Russian Federation and Iran which he said are "most responsible for supporting, equipping, and financing the criminal Assad regime".

But the Violations Documentation Center (VDC), which records alleged violations of global law in Syria, said bodies were found with oral foaming, cyanosis, and corneal burns.

Another US official familiar with how the US intelligence is unfolding regarding the attack tells CNN that the initial intelligence assessment that a chemical agent was used was based on viewing the videos and comparing the shown physical effects with what is known about chlorine and nerve agents.

The strikes were a response to a suspected chemical weapons attack on the Syrian town of Douma last weekend which killed dozens of civilians.

Loud explosions early yesterday rocked the Syrian capital and filled the sky with heavy smoke after US President Donald Trump announced airstrikes in retaliation for the country's alleged use of chemical weapons. Both the Russian military and the Syrian government said they would facilitate the mission and ensure the inspectors' security.

Guterres also said a failure to hold someone accountable for the attack could encourage more.

The US and its allies believe the Syrian regime was behind the attack, but Russian Federation has long insisted it was staged by rebels in an attempt to provoke further Western intervention.

Mr Trump, who has cancelled a planned trip overseas, has been canvassing support for strikes from the leaders of France and the UK.

On Wednesday, the US President said the missiles were "coming", but on Thursday he tweeted that he had "never said when". It "could be very soon or not so soon at all", he said. "We are still far from that", Kortunov told ABC News. "So they'll be made fairly soon".

Putin was quoted as urging for a "thorough and objective probe" into the reports of the chemical weapons attack. Russian Ambassador to Beirut Alexander Zasypkin cited orders by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

He added that Russian Federation would "keep all its global obligations in full".
