Two Koreas to discuss announcing official end to war, report says

President Moon Jae-in reaffirmed his resolve Tuesday to establish permanent peace on the Korean Peninsula, saying the denuclearization of North Korea is the most urgent task facing his country but is only part of an ultimate objective to ensure co-existence and co-prosperity of the divided Koreas. "That is why the visit planned for the first half of 2018 had to be postponed", Ambassador Kim Dae sik told the press conference in Astana.

A South Korean delegation met with Kim Jong-un in Pyongyang on March 5.

Kim and Ri Sol Ju watched the troupe perform choreodrama "Red Women Company" at the East Pyongyang Grand Theatre on Monday, the Korean Central News Agency said. With the test of that long-range missile in November, the North said it had "realized the great historic cause of completing the state nuclear force".

It would be the first visit to North Korea by a Chinese president since Hu Jintao back in 2005.

The South Korean expert anticipated that the inter-Korean summit's major goal is to have Kim Jong-un personally confirm his country's readiness for denuclearization.

The visit came amid a flurry of diplomatic efforts by the North, starting a New Year speech in which Kim opened the door to participating in February's Winter Olympics in South Korea. South Korea and a US-led United Nations force are technically still at war with North Korea after the 1950-53 Korean conflict ended with a truce, not a peace treaty. With that in mind, the South has already started to renovate the Peace House at Panmunjom to greet North Korean delegates ahead of the inter-Korean summit, leading up to the meeting between the two leaders.

South and North Korea are discussing plans to announce an official end to the military conflict between the two countries that are still technically at war, the Munhwa Ilbo newspaper reported, citing an unidentified South Korean official.

American officials are still sceptical of Kim's sudden overtures, with Trump's pick for secretary of state, CIA Director Mike Pompeo, telling lawmakers last week that North Korea should not expect rewards from talks with the United States until it takes irreversible steps to give up its nuclear weapons.

Mr Moon hopes that his summit with Mr Kim can lay the foundation for a deal on denuclearisation between Washington and Pyongyang at the following summit between Mr Kim and U.S. president Donald Trump in May or early June.
