Trump wanted out of Syria, but is now firmly back in

Trump Brings 'Righteous Power Against Barbarism and Brutality'

"We acted to deter the future use of chemical weapons by holding the Syrian regime responsible for its atrocities against humanity", Nikki Haley, UN ambassador for the USA, said.

They also discussed the need to reinvigorate multinational stabilization efforts in Syria to ensure the long-term defeat of Islamic State (IS).

Trump did not rule out additional strikes, saying he would take additional action "as necessary and appropriate".

On Saturday Trump, British Prime Minister Theresa May and French President Emmanuel Macron huddled by telephone to discuss their joint action.

On Friday night, the United States, France, and the United Kingdom launched strikes on a number of targets in Syria in response to the alleged chemical incident in the Damascus' suburb of Duma.

New resolution: According to French Ambassador Francois Delattre, France, Britain and the United States will soon present the Council with a new draft resolution aimed at achieving a lasting solution in Syria. It is still unclear how effective the strikes will be against Syria's regime.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned that further Western attacks on Syria would bring chaos to world affairs, as Washington prepared to increase pressure on Russia with new economic sanctions.

The bombings, hailed by US President Donald Trump as a success but denounced by Damascus and its allies as an act of aggression, marked the biggest intervention by Western countries against Assad and ally Russian Federation, whose foreign minister Sergei Lavrov called them "unacceptable and lawless".

Syrian state media accused Western powers of trying to hinder the investigation with their attack.

It comes after the US, UK and French launched strikes on three sites linked to Syria's chemical weapons programme. "We humiliated their missiles", said Mahmoud Ibrahim, who waved a Syrian flag.

Speaking to Rouhani by telephone the day after US-led strikes on suspected chemical weapons facilities, Putin said "if such actions, carried out in violation of the United Nations Charter, are repeated, that would inevitably provoke chaos in worldwide relations", according to a statement from the Kremlin.

Haley says the fact that Assad was making the use of chemical weapons "more normal and that Russian Federation was covering this up, all that has got to stop".

But the military seemed less than troubled as it claimed that Syrian aerial defenses managed to shoot down most of the missiles and divert others.

Inspectors from the global chemical weapons watchdog OPCW were due to try to visit Douma later on Saturday to inspect the site of the suspected gas attack on April 7. McKenzie says the missiles were fired after the "last impact" was over.

But analysts question the reasons for these latest raids - which signalled that Western leaders would not let a chemical weapons attack go without punishment - but demurred about deeper involvement when barrel bombs are used.

"Vladimir Putin, in particular, stressed that if such actions committed in violation of the UN Charter continue, then it will inevitably lead to chaos in worldwide relations", the Kremlin statement said.
