Theresa May's Statement on the Syria Strike

May ‘orders British submarines into position’ as UK considers strike against Syria

"I ordered the United States armed forces to launch precision strikes on targets associated with the chemical weapon capabilities of Syrian dictator of Bashar al-Assad", Trump said in a live TV announcement from the White House Diplomatic Room.

But she will be grilled over why she broke with a convention to seek parliamentary approval for the action, a decision that she and her ministers say was driven by the need to act quickly.

British Prime Minister Theresa May faced a backlash from the domestic opposition after launching military strikes on Syria without consulting parliament.

In the call, the two leaders had agreed that the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad "had established a pattern of unsafe behaviour in relation to the use of chemical weapons", Downing Street said.

The Prime Minister said she will go before the Commons on Monday to answer questions about her decision but insisted there was no "alternative path".

The US president announced the joint operation in a national address on Friday evening, saying the strikes would target the regime's ability to use chemical weapons.

There is broad-based global support for the action we have taken,"pointing out that she has secured the support of a string of world leaders".

"While this action is specifically about deterring the Syrian regime, it will also send a clear signal to anyone else who believes they can use chemical weapons with impunity", Mrs May said.

Both Syria, which denies any chemical use, and Russian Federation, which provides military support to the Syrian government, have reacted angrily to the action.

"This is not about intervening in a civil war".

"There is broad based worldwide support for the action we have taken", she will say.

Both Syria and Russian Federation have said reports of the attack were fabricated by rebels and rescue workers in Douma and have accused the United States of seeking to use it as a pretext to attack the government.

British Prime Minister Theresa May's senior ministers agreed on the need for action at a Cabinet meeting on Thursday, but Downing Street did not specify what measures the United Kingdom would take. "These strikes are about deterring the barbaric use of chemical weapons in Syria and beyond".

The UK is "confident" that air strikes carried out by Britain, the USA and France on suspected chemical weapons facilities in Syria have been successful, the PM has said.

"Most worrying, is that she has acted at the behest of presidential tweets and sidelined parliament", he said.

May later told reporters in her Downing Street office that the Western missiles struck a chemical weapons storage and production facility, a chemical weapons research center and a military bunker involved in chemical weapons attacks.

Many politicians in Britain, including some in Mrs May's own Conservative Party, had called for Parliament to be recalled from holiday to give authority to any military strike.

British lawmakers voted down taking military action against Damascus in 2013, in what was widely viewed as an assertion of parliamentary sovereignty on the use of force.

Massive explosions were heard and filmed in the Syrian capital Damascus and there were unconfirmed reports of Syrian rebels using the opportunity to attack to the South.

The U.S. has about 2,000 troops on the ground in Syria as advisers to a makeshift group of anti-Islamic State fighters known as the Syrian Democratic Forces.
