Theresa May tells British Parliament that Syria strikes were 'legal and moral'

Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May attends a press conference in 10 Downing Street London

Saying she had no doubt the "Syrian regime" was behind an attack which she called a "stain on humanity", May told lawmakers she had acted in the national interest and refused to say whether she would seek their approval for further action.

Ms May told members in the House of Commons that consulting them would have been impractical, both because Parliament was on a spring break until Monday and because some of the intelligence behind the decision was classified.

BRITISH Prime Minister Theresa May on Monday extolled the benefits of free trade among Commonwealth countries, seeking new sources of commerce as Britain looks to finalise divorce terms with its current biggest trading partner, the European Union. She is now enjoying worldwide support for her action in Syria and against Moscow over a nerve agent attack on a former Russian spy in Britain.

Also, Western capitals defended their military actions against three Syrian facilities, stressing the limited nature of the strikes.

The joint statement comes amid worsening relations between the two countries and Moscow, after Washington and London launched coordinated strikes against Russia's ally Syria.

British Royal Air Force jets joined American and French warplanes and ships in hitting targets in Syria early on Saturday in response to a reported chemical attack by the Syrian Government in the town of Douma.

She accused Syria, aided by Russian Federation, of trying to block an investigation into the gas attack being undertaken by the global chemical weapons watchdog.

The French parliament also debated the strikes.

Secretary General Jagtar Singh said "We have reminded Prime Minister Modi of his words during his last visit to the United Kingdom in 2015 that a wall exists between Sikhs and India due to longstanding injustices and that he understood the pain Sikhs feel with India".

Jeremy Corbyn, head of the opposition Labour party, led criticism of May for not recalling parliament a vote, accusing her of blindly following U.S. President Donald Trump's orders.

"We have not done this because President Trump asked us to, we have done it because we believed it was the right thing to do, and we are not alone", May said to cheers.

"We can not in good conscience, talk about the young people of the world, about securing a legacy for our children and grandchildren, without tackling a disease that, worldwide, kills one of them every two minutes", she will say. Philippe told lawmakers that France's "riposte" was "proportionate" and sent a strong, clear message to dissuade Syria's government from using chemical weapons.
