Syria's Assad tells Russian lawmakers Western strikes were act of aggression

UK envoy Russia and Syria must let inspectors visit Douma

United States and allied strikes against Syria took out targets with materiel that could have been used to produce chemical weapons such as sarin, a senior USA official says.

There were expressions of anger from Syria's allies, with Russian Federation labelling the attack an "act of aggression", Iran calling it "a war crime" and Syria describing it as "barbarous". He criticized the US and its allies for launching the strike without waiting for global inspectors to complete their visit to the area. It was not clear when the visit would take place.

Marine Lt. Gen. Kenneth F. McKenzie, director of the Joint Staff at the Pentagon, said the allied airstrikes "took out the heart" of Assad's chemical weapons arsenal.

Negotiations on the draft resolution are set to begin on Monday, but diplomats remain unclear when the UN Security Council would vote on the proposal. Moscow condemned the Western states for refusing to wait for their findings.

"I say to the foreign secretary, I say to the prime minister, where is the legal basis for this?" Corbyn said in an interview with the BBC.

In Damascus, Assad told a group of visiting Russian lawmakers that Western missile strikes on his country were an act of aggression, Russian news agencies reported.

It was unclear whether Trump thought sarin had been used when he said on Twitter on Wednesday that U.S. missiles "will be coming" and accused Assad of being a "Gas Killing Animal".

Russia, whose ties with the West have sunk to levels of Cold War-era hostility, denies any gas attack happened in Douma and even said Britain staged it to whip up anti-Russian hysteria.

The Pentagon released photographic evidence of the bombed Barza facility in Syria's capital city of Damascus. And for the second time in his presidency, the USA commander-in-chief demanded retaliation.

McKenzie, a Marine Corps general, said he has no reports of civilian casualties following the U.S. -led strikes and that the attacks overnight Friday were launched from U.S., France and United Kingdom aircraft and ships, including those in the Persian Gulf, Red Sea and eastern Mediterranean Sea.

More news: Missile strikes underscore Russian support of Syrian chemical weapon capability

Russian and Iranian military help over the past three years has allowed Assad to crush the rebel threat to topple him.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has urged all Security Council members to show restraint, as US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley told the meeting that Washington remains "locked and loaded" to respond to any future Syrian chemical attacks.

The operation marked the second time the USA struck Assad's military. Obama opted to seek congressional approval over the use of military force in Syria.

In the wake of last weekend's attack, some USA officials advocated a larger strike than the limited action Trump ordered in April 2017, also in response to suspected chemical weapons use.

Sarin had previously appeared to be the threshold for intervention.

British Tornado and Typhoon warplanes, American B-1 bombers and French Rafale jets also took part in the strikes. The strikes were the biggest foreign military action so far against Syria's regime. On Saturday Trump, British Prime Minister Theresa May and French President Emmanuel Macron huddled by telephone to discuss their joint action."By working together, in a coordinated fashion, we can definitively prevent the Syrian regime from carrying out chemical attacks against its own people", Macron said on Twitter.May has faced a backlash from her domestic opposition for launching the strikes without consulting parliament, while opposition lawmakers in the U.S. warned Trump that any broader military campaign would require a well-formulated strategic vision and authorization from Congress.

Faysal Itani, a scholar at the Atlantic Council, said that even if the USA -led strikes prevented new chemical attacks, it would not change Assad's larger strategy or halt his ongoing conventional assaults on rebel-held areas.

Assad's key regional ally, Iran's Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, branded US President Donald Trump, France's Emmanuel Macron and Britain's Theresa May "criminals".

Meanwhile, Pope Francis called on world leaders to renew efforts to bring peace to Syria, saying he was deeply troubled by their failure to agree on a joint plan to end the bloodshed.
