Should Mark Zuckerberg be Facebook's chairman and CEO? Some investors say no

We've been oversharing online all these years and now we're surprised by a lack of privacy

I thought about George the Elder the other day when catching snippets of the appearance by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg (depending on your view of history) before Senate and House committees. As per the filing, around $7.3 million was spent in providing security to the billionaire's home and during his travel while the company incurred a cost of $1.5 million for Zuckerberg's use of private jets for official trips.

Facebook has removed advertisements from illegal online pharmacies following questions brought up during a congressional hearing this week.

"We've seen instances where developers' apps are collecting and sending information to third parties and they are not even aware it's happening", said Mr Hardy.

Mark Zuckerberg's second-in-command runs Facebook's operations and oversees its advertising business, placing her in a almost unrivaled role of responsibility when as many as 87 million Facebook users had their data siphoned by Cambridge Analytica, a British firm with ties to Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign.

Last week, in a session with the US lawmakers, the 33-year old Zuckerberg admitted that he took the blame for the data scrape and emphasized that user privacy is of utmost importance to the firm. None of the good changes the company announced in recent weeks will truly hurt Facebook because it hasn't revised its economic engine: all that data, and unfettered use of it without informed approval of Facebook's citizens. Facebook right now operates as take or leave it. Users of Facebook give the company broad permission to collect whatever information the operators of Facebook want for whatever reason. That means that these non-subscribers haven't a clue about what information Facebook has obtained about them. Just like everything else concerning Facebook, he presented this as an idealistic initiative; but questions about children form an alarming component of the broader debate on privacy and data collection.

But like Facebook, Google's massive advertising network was used by Russian sources to spread disinformation during the 2016 United States election.

When asked by the Financial Times if Facebook's board had discussed having him step down, Zuckerberg replied: "Not that I am aware of".

In the meantime, Facebook has adapted more about Sadia's group of friends - notwithstanding the way that Sadia has never utilized Facebook, and thusly has never consented to its strategies for information gathering.

Since then, however, one Republican ad consultant says he has gotten around the clampdown by simply placing Facebook ads that direct users to sign petitions on sites outside the social network. FB, the $480 billion, 4th largest corporate giant in the world, generates $40 billion in advertising a year by trading data about the personal lives and preferences it has harvested from account holders.

More: After Facebook hearings, users want to know: who is protecting my data? And the agreements users are confronted with are often opaque making it hard for people to understand what data is being collected and shared, and who would get access to it.

Problems like the one at Facebook are far from new, according to Seth Hardy, director of security research at Appthority, a mobile security firm based in San Francisco.

Privacy experts said Google's data practices and controls are more advanced, more detailed and simpler to use than Facebook's. However, as we have seen FB is in the business of hosting content of billions of users, and trading it for advertising revenue. Only a dramatic data diet can curb the worst downsides of Facebook.
