Russia Warns of "Consequences" as Putin Denounces Syria Strikes

A highly placed Russian politician is likening President Donald Trump to Adolf Hitler after the launch of airstrikes against Syria, and says he regards the action as a move against Russia.

Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told a news conference Friday that there was a "very alarming atmosphere" over the issue and likened plans for a military response to failed action in Libya, an Euronews report said.

"The current escalation of the situation around Syria has a devastating impact on the whole system of global relations", he added.

"A short time ago, I ordered the United States Armed Forces to launch precision strikes on targets associated with the chemical weapons capabilities of Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad", the President said.

The Western countries blame Assad for the Douma attack that killed dozens of people.

He criticized Russia's support of the Syrian regime saying "Russia must decide if it will continue down this dark path".

Syria's air defence system, which mostly consists of systems made in the Soviet Union, has intercepted 71 of the missiles fired on Saturday by the U.S., British and French forces, he added. Haley says the message from the USA, United Kingdom and French airstrikes earlier Saturday that "crippled Syria's chemical weapons program" was "crystal clear".

The second was a chemical weapons storage facility near Homs.

Monday's comment from the White House came in contrast to Haley's specific announcement on Sunday.

Assad is known to have stocks of the nerve agent sarin, and has previously used a mixture of chlorine and sarin in attacks, according to USA officials.

"We are determined to completely crush ISIS and create the conditions that will prevent its return." she said. "The US will be a partner and a friend".

U.S. ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley announced on Sunday that the USA will imminently impose a new rounds of sanctions on Russian Federation. So in that sense, they're still opening - they're holding out their hands saying that they're willing to cooperate with Russian Federation if Russia will do the right thing here.

Inspectors from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) went to Syria last week to inspect the Douma site but have yet to gain access to the town, which is now under government control after the rebels withdrew.

Russian reporter, Maxim Borodin, died in hospital on Sunday, according to news website Novy Den, where he worked.

How has Russian Federation responded to the in a single day strikes on Syria? This was playing with fire after Russia - Syria's strongest ally - had warned that a missile attack would be met with force by Moscow, raising fears of a straight fight between the United States and Russia.

Assad denies he has used chemical weapons, and the Trump administration has yet to present hard evidence of what it says precipitated the allied missiles attack: a chlorine gas attack on civilians in Douma on April 7.

Russian and Iranian military help over the past three years has allowed Assad to crush the rebel threat to topple him. Russian officials beyond Mr. Putin have suggested that the aim of these USA -led airstrikes were essentially to prevent the OPCW from carrying out its work.

Russia's Colonel General Sergei Rudoski said the strikes did not cause any casualties and that the Syrian military facilities suffered minor damage. Russia, negotiating primarily with Iran and Turkey, remains keen to forge a political settlement in Syria that would cement a long-term foothold for Moscow in the Middle East.

Russian President Vladimir Putin stated on Saturday that the strikes had been carried out in violation of norms and principles of the worldwide law.
