The Oklahoma teacher walkout has ended after nine days, the state's largest teachers union said, but teachers across the state pledged to continue fighting for more school funding and higher pay.
Claiming a major victory for students, the Oklahoma Education Association called off a statewide teacher walkout Thursday and urged educators to focus on the fall elections. "We've won on the nearly half a billion dollars (for teacher pay and education funding)".
This idea has received a lot of backlash and has been mocked by the parents and students alike. "However, we want our staff to know that in a life and death situation, an attack option may be necessary and to use any available tool at their disposal".
"This person will no longer be allowed to serve in our schools, and we have directed the company that provides substitutes for our classrooms to remove him from the list of available substitute teachers".
That raises public school spending to $2.9 billion next school year, up from $2.4 billion this year. "We're going to put them in a room and we're going to make that happen".
The average $6,100 salary increase would bring teacher compensation from last to second in the region. She also signs the repeal of the hotel-motel tax that was in the original education funding package.

"Fair and equitable school funding based on student need is fundamental for public schools to ensure every child gets the high-quality education they deserve", AEU president Correna Haythorpe said. Before the strike, state lawmakers passed a pay raise of $6,100 on average for teachers and $1,250 for school professionals, funded by the first major tax hike in the state in almost 30 years.
To that point, the recent rounds of Arizona teacher protests seem to offer more benefit to fledgling organized labor groups than to the teachers themselves. She said the walkout is driven by teachers, not OEA.
"Just because the Capitol is not filled with 30,000 teachers does not mean this fight is over", said Cindy Gaete, who she cried when she saw thousands of protesters at the state capitol in Oklahoma City on Tuesday after she marched more than 100 miles from Tulsa in protest.
"I would say that I feel disgusting about what happened, to be honest with you", Fish said.
Hansen stressed his findings only indicate states in which conditions are ripe for teacher action, but whether or not strikes actually occur will hinge on a variety of factors, including "current tax and school finance policies, partisan divides, union influence and many other state-level features".
She said that although the walkout has been halted, the mission has not been finished. By Thursday, 70% of respondents indicated they were unsure of continuing, she said. As we reported this week, USA teachers earned less a year ago, on average, than they did back in 1990 after inflation. "I'm immature, '" the police account said.
