Nawaz Sharif, Jahangir Tareen disqualified for life

PTI leader says PML-N must accept the verdict

The Supreme Court (SC) on Friday ruled that disqualification of a lawmaker under Article 62 (1)(f) of the Constitution would be for lifetime.

Both PTI and PMLN have weakened the parliament, she said and added that the courts have taken the space of the parliament because both these parties dragged the courts into political issues.

A five-member bench of the apex court, headed by Chief Justice Saqib Nisar and comprising Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed, Justice Umar Ata Bandial, Justice Ijazul Ahsan and Justice Sajjad Ali Shah, reserved the verdict in all 13 appeals against the disqualification of lawmakers.

A three-judge SC bench headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar had on Dec 15 past year disqualified Mr Tareen under Article 62 (1)(f) of the Constitution for deliberately submitting a false statement to the apex court to hide his property in the United Kingdom.

Also, the apex court disqualified PTI General Secretary Jahangir Tareen stating that the reply submitted by Tareen was a confession in itself, thus disqualifying him under Article 62 (1) (F) of the Constitution of Pakistan.

"This is the same kind of decision that led to the hanging of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, to the assassination of Benazir Bhutto and then to the disqualification of an elected prime minister while referring to Nawaz Sharif", claimed Aurangzeb.

The former premier had maintained that in his understanding "to take part in election process is a fundamental right and therefore no perpetual disqualification can be imposed on someone by interpreting Article 62 of the Constitution of Islamic Republic of Pakistan".

He wondered if the disqualification of the lawmakers will continue even after the death, as no limit of time has been set in the law.

"I being a strong proponent of democracy believe that it is the right of people of Pakistan to participate in the process of election and to reject or elect candidate (s) of their choice".
