NASA's Ames Research Center in California's Silicon Valley manages the investigation, called Micro-11, aboard SpaceX's 14 cargo resupply services mission to the International Space Station for NASA.

NASA's next exoplanet-hunting telescope is preparing for launch. Kepler has found more than 5000 exoplanet candidates so far, and confirmed about half of them.

By combining global data from NASA satellites with the ship, aircraft, and autonomous assets such as floats, along with laboratory research and balloon data, boffins are able to not only understand the current state of the atmosphere, but also how it is evolving over time.

Watch below to see the field of view of TESS, and how it plans to scan space around us.

The video is actually an updated version of a Moon tour video that NASA first published six years ago. According to IST, it will be launched around 4.02 a.m. on April 17 from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, as per NASA.

How do you find exoplanets?

NASA is leading the study of the world's largest phytoplankton bloom in the North Atlantic to see how the tiny sea critters influence the climate in every season on our planet.

The Kepler spacecraft stared at one patch of sky, looking at hundreds of thousands of stars for a slight wink when a planet passes in front of the star.

This animation demonstrates how a "transiting" exoplanet shows up to a telescope like Kepler or TESS.

TESS will use the same transit method Kepler used to find planets. This will provide much more information on these targets, as the spacecraft's cameras spend a total of 27 days on each sector of space.

The first year of observations will map the 13 sectors encompassing the southern sky, and the second year will map the 13 sectors of the northern sky.

Many of TESS's planets should be close enough to our own that, once they are identified by TESS, scientists can zoom in on them using other telescopes, to detect atmospheres, characterize atmospheric conditions, and even look for signs of habitability.

That schedule will limit TESS's ability to spot repeat transits, except for those planets orbiting closely around red dwarf stars, however by scanning almost all of the space around us, it still has a chance to pick up thousands, to tens of thousands of transiting planets during its initial 2-year scan, and possibly things that we cannot even anticipate at this time.

In a statement, the agency said: "Little is now known about the biology of reproduction in space, and this experiment will begin to address that gap by measuring, for the first time, how well bull and human sperm functions in space". "To me, the most exciting part of any mission is the unexpected result, the one that nobody saw coming".
