Mariah Carey Has Decided to Write a Memoir

In this week's PEOPLE cover story, Mariah Carey has revealed for the first time her battle with bipolar disorder.

Carey says she was diagnosed in 2001 after being hospitalized for a mental and physical breakdown, a situation she "didn't want to believe".

She said she is taking medication that "is not making me feel too exhausted or sluggish" and is working on a new album due out later this year.

Carey says, "I got back to doing what I love - writing songs and making music".

She said: "I'm just in a really good place right now, where I'm comfortable discussing my struggles with bipolar II disorder".

You couldn't pay Mariah Carey to wipe that smile off her face!

Mariah said treatment came after "the hardest couple of years I've been through", which involved her professional life, an E! reality show and romantic troubles.

Carey who was previously married to Hollywood actor Nick Cannon, father of her twins before dating Australian billionaire James Packer, said that she feared "someone would expose her".

Turns out the mother of two initially thought what she had was some sort of "severe sleep disorder", something that made her "irritable and in constant fear of letting people down". I was working and working and working.

The difference between bipolar I and II is that bipolar II sufferers won't have experienced a full manic episode.

In her interview, she said she's fought to control her bipolar disorder and is now doing great. It just switches quickly for me: it's a cliff edge effect - whereas some people experience the change more gradually. "I would feel so lonely and sad - even guilty that I wasn't doing what I needed to be doing for my career".

"I'm hopeful we can get to a place where the stigma is lifted from people going through anything alone", she concluded. It can be incredibly isolating.
