Mainz out of relegation zone after weird VAR ruling against Freiburg

Mainz VAR penalty

It came just before the break when Pablo De Blasis converted from the penalty spot to give the hosts a halftime lead - but that was only half the story.

A weird video assistant referee (VAR) decision caused mayhem in a Bundesliga game on Monday night when two teams were ordered back on to the pitch at half time because the referee chose to award a penalty after watching a replay on TV.

The 2-0 win sees Mainz leapfrog Freiburg in the Bundesliga table on goal difference, climbing out of the relegation zone at the expense of their defeated opponents.

The penalty was given for a handball by Marc-Oliver Kempf that the VAR noticed after the halftime whistle had blown.

Following a delay of over six minutes De Blasis scored the penalty in the bottom left corner and Winkmann blew again for half-time, during which the unfortunate Kempf was substituted.

"We're not going out", said Streich as he led his confused players back into the changing room.

Both sets of fans also hurled toilet rolls onto the pitch as a protest to moving the game to a Monday night.

But, as it turned out the home supporters were in fact protesting against Bundesliga fixtures being played on Monday nights.

It was so loud that Mainz coach Sandro Schwarz even said afterwards that it was distracting, while VAR project leader Lutz Michael Fröhlich even suggested the noise had hampered the referee's ability to hear the video assistant on the crucial penalty call.

Where to start with this one.
