Local Congressional Leaders on Syria Airstrikes

Shouts of "Allah, Syria, and only Bashar", a reference to Assad, rang out.

The United States, France and the United Kingdom pounded Syria with air strikes and Trump said he was prepared to sustain the response until Assad's government stopped its use of chemical weapons.

In an interview published Sunday in the Journal du Dimanche newspaper, French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian reached out to Russian Federation, saying "we should join our efforts to promote a political process in Syria that would allow a way out of the crisis".

"Everyone is going to feel it at this point", Ms Haley said, warning of consequences for Mr Assad's foreign allies.

University of Chicago political science professor Robert Pape doesn't think the airstrikes will make much difference and may put USA troops at risk for retaliation.

The military strike in Syria that drew a gleeful "Mission Accomplished" from President Trump on Twitter is not exacting the same elation from some Middle East experts who see a long, hard climb to peace in the war-weary Muslim nation.

That's a problem if President Trump's previous goal of leaving Syria is ever to be realized.

The United States, France and Britain launched 105 missiles on Saturday targeting what the Pentagon said were three chemical weapons facilities in Syria, in retaliation for a suspected poison gas attack in the Syrian town of Douma on April 7.

"The strikes will reaffirm President Trump's commitment to deterring chemical weapons use but will not solve the Syria problem".

His choice of words recalled a similar claim associated with President George W Bush following the US-led invasion of Iraq.

Trump tweeted on Sunday that the mission was "so perfectly carried out, with such precision, that the only way the Fake News Media could demean was by my use of the term 'Mission Accomplished'".

The UK, US and France have presented plans for a ceasefire in Syria in the wake of their joint airstrikes on the war-torn country. US officials said they gave Russian Federation no specific warnings of the attacks or the targets, but used the usual hotline with Moscow's military to ensure the airspace was clear. "We have not denied the team any request for it to go to Douma", U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric said.

The assault was carefully limited to minimise civilian casualties and avoid direct conflict with Russian Federation in Syria, but confusion arose over the extent to which Washington warned Moscow in advance. The Pentagon says no missiles were engaged. "The President has been clear that he wants USA forces to come home as quickly as possible", said White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders in a statement.

Russian Federation and Iran called the use of force by the United States and its French and British allies a "military crime" and "act of aggression".

The military strike was conducted to deter Assad's brutal behavior with its citizens and to give a message to Russian Federation and Iran, which have backed his government.

Syria has called the Western accusations "fabricated lies" and called on global bodies like the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons to investigate the alleged chemical gas attack. The U.K. Defense Ministry said the strikes were "successful".

Syrians gather in a central square in Damascus on April 16.

Pictures from satellite imagery company DigitalGlobe show sites including the Barzah Research and Development Centre and the Him Shinshar Chemical Weapons Storage Facility have been reduced to rubble.
