Leaked Apple memo details efforts to stop leaks

Apple in a lengthy memo posted to its internal blog said it ‘caught 29 leakers,’ last year and 12 of them were arrested

The memo obtained by Bloomberg cites specific examples of people the company caught, including an employee who leaked information about the company's plans from an internal meeting.

The establishment of a very us-versus-them culture when dealing with outsiders is notable because it means Apple employees may fear becoming whistleblowers. "These people not only lose their jobs, they can face extreme difficulty finding employment elsewhere", it read.

The Cupertino, Calif. -based company also warned employees to be wary of members of the press, saying "it's important to remember that you're getting played". Apple says that digital forensics helped identify employees who passed along confidential information about the iPhone X, iPad Pro and AirPods directly to a particular phone blog (not us, by the way). Recall, Apple will likely introduce two iPhones this year with OLED displays, a 6.5-inch iPhone X Plus and a second-gen iPhone X. More interesting, though, is the tidbit that Apple and Samsung are still negotiating on price for the OLED panels.

Sources from multiple Apple Stores have tipped off 9to5Mac with word that in addition to AppleCare employees, external skilled labor has been brought on to cope with incoming jobs.

Apple sympathizers will say that leakers are fundamentally different from whistleblowers-employees may justifiably feel compelled to speak out about wrongs committed at a company, but leaking for leaking's sake is bad for morale. In 2017, Apple caught 29 leakers. Chances are, the March 2019 announcement window and subsequent tail off is a result of forecasting for where they see iTunes Store sales trending over the next 12 months.

Interestingly, this isn't the first time when Apple has warned its employees to stop leaking internal information.

Earlier today, Apple sent a memo to its employees warning them not to leak, but it should probably worry about the US FCC.

The memo also details what happens to leakers who are caught.

Apple seems to be notorious for its culture of secrecy and has reportedly made employees sign non-disclosure agreements specific to projects and even used black cloths to cover unreleased products.

But it's not all Apple employees' fault. "The potential criminal consequences of leaking are real", says Tom Moyer of Global Security, "and that can become part of your personal and professional identity forever". Leaks can also impact sales of current devices, as consumers hold off on buying as they know something better is soon to arrive.
