Kenya electoral board commissioners resign over leadership fight

IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati during a past event the commission is facing uncertainty after resignation of three commissioners

"My call for IEBC Commissioners to resign is informed by recent wrangles linked to the fight for tenders plus control and manipulation of IEBC staff", Murkomen said on Twitter.

Tumult continues at Kenya's independent electoral commission (IEBC) almost seven months after elections ended.

On April 19, the commission sent its chief executive on three months' compulsory leave pending an audit without giving a detailed reason for the move.

Chiloba had accused Chebukati of suspending him without the consent of all the commissioners.

Vice chair Connie Nkatha Maina, Margaret Mwachanya and Paul Kurgat said they no longer find their positions under their tenable.

Akombe cited interference from political players and lack of independence among Commissioners. It is either Chiloba is reinstated or the entire commission goes down.

Senator Kipchumba Murkomen of the ruling Jubilee Party is now calling for commission head Wafula Chebukati to step down and for the IEBC to be disbanded.

"The Commission Chairperson has failed to be the steady and stable hand that steers the ship in hard times and give direction when needed", Commissioner Mwachanya said flanked by Nkatha and Kurgat. "All that we need is a strengthened and robust secretariat", he said adding that the number of commissioners in other independent commissions should also be trimmed to five.

Since a year ago, Chebukati has been struggling to stamp authority in the commission and the latest twist of events could be the end of his controversial tenure in the commission.

The commission conducted another election in October, President Uhuru Kenyatta won that vote in a landslide, after challenger Raila Odinga pulled out of the race.

The resignation of the three leaves the commission technically dysfunctional with only Chebukati, and Commissioners Boya Molu and Abdi Guliye remaining put.

Commissioner Roselyn Akombe was the first to call it quit on October 18 previous year, a week to the October 26 repeat presidential poll.
