Kendrick Lamar Makes History, Wins Pulitzer Prize For Music For "DAMN"

Pulitzer Prize 2018: Guess which huge US music star is first non-classical or jazz WINNER?

Kendrick Lamar is officially a Pulitzer Prize victor.

But in a year when the media has been galvanised by digging into Trump's chaotic presidency, Lamar's award for his album Damn also stood out as the rapper from Compton, California, became the first rap artist to win a Pulitzer in music. Lamar's Pulitzer win marked a significant departure as previous honorees have been drawn from the worlds of classical music and jazz.

Many were (rightfully) shocked when Lamar's universally acclaimed "DAMN." was bested for the 2018 Grammy for album of the year by Bruno Mars' incredibly popular, and equally mediocre, "24 Magic".

This marks the first time that Reuters has won two prizes in one year.

Lamar was awarded the Pulitzer over co-finalists Michael Gilbertson and his string Quartet and Ted Hearne's cantata Sound from the Bench. The victor receives a $15,000 prize.

"DAMN.", Lamar's third album, topped the Billboard 200 album charts for three weeks on its release previous year.

The New York Times and The New Yorker were also awarded prizes for their reporting on Harvey Weinstein that put the #MeToo movement in the national spotlight.

"Both of these pieces", Lamar said of the album's duality, "are who I am".
