Inspectors Push to Visit Suspected Syria Gas Attack Site After Western Strikes

Russian Federation and Syria have stalled access to Douma by chemical weapons experts seeking to probe an alleged poison gas attack citing security concerns, diplomats said Monday, amid USA fears that Moscow "may have tampered" with the site.

And U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley indicated over the weekend that new economic sanctions will be announced Monday against Russian Federation for enabling President Bashar Assad's regime to continue to use chemical weapons. The Syrian government and its ally Russian Federation have denied involvement in any such attack.

In London, British Prime Minister Theresa May repeated that the military action was not about "intervening in a civil war" and "it is not about regime change".

The tripartite military action from the United States, France and Britain was created to set back or destroy Syria's chemical weapons program, the three countries said, and deter any further use in violation of global conventions. "Please be assured", Macron said in his interview, "we've convinced him that we had to stay on in the long term".

Activists say the alleged chemical attack killed at least 40 people.

The inspectors were due on Monday to attempt to visit Douma, but the British delegation to the OPCW said they had not yet been granted access, citing the agency's director general.

The Group of Seven leading industrialized nations has issued a joint statement endorsing the USA -led air strikes in Syria.

Douma, which lies in the eastern Goutha district on the outskirts of the capital, was one of the last bastions near Damascus of rebels fighting to topple Assad, and the alleged attack took place amid a ferocious government offensive. But it was the world saying that we've had enough of the use of chemical weapons.

"They are hard for us, but will do more damage to the United States of America and Europe", RIA quoted Serebrennikov as saying.

The joint airstrikes by the United States, Britain and France bombed sites that the three countries said were linked to Syria's chemical weapons program.

Damascus sky lights up with service to air missile fire as the USA launches an attack on Syria targeting different parts of the Syrian capital Damascus, Syria, early Saturday.

The Western leaders were also facing scrutiny at home over their actions.

Mrs May will ask for an emergency debate to allow more time for discussion in a nod to the fury among MPs at not being consulted, but she is not offering a vote.

But, MPs did not get to vote on whether they approved of the decision to attack Syria's chemical weapons facilities.

But she will be questioned over why she broke with a convention to seek parliamentary approval for the action, a decision that she and her ministers say was driven by the need to act quickly.

Germany, Italy, Canada, Australia and European Council president Donald Tusk have "all expressed their support for the actions that Britain, France and America have taken", the PM will add.

The Labour leader said chlorine has been used by "a number of parties in the conflict" in Syria as a weapon and questioned the legality of the airstrikes.
