Google introducing Snapchat-style self-destructing messages in Gmail

Amongst other features Confidential Mode allows users to set an expiry date on their email

It will give you the option to put a time limit onto an email that you send and after it expires, it will be rendered unreadable.

The improved design, which will be the biggest redesign of Gmail in nearly a decade, will feature a handy snooze feature, that allows you to put off dealing with annoying emails, an offline mode and Google's brilliant Smart Reply feature.

One of those features is the excellent Smart Reply which uses AI to offer up a choice of three automatic response to an email.

Google is testing a feature called "confidential mode" in Gmail, which allows users sending mail to other Gmail users to set an expiration date for their correspondence, and informs the user that "Options to forward, download, or copy this email's contents and attachments will be disabled".

The actual security this provides is unclear, as the feature makes no mention of the use of encryption.

Here are six changes that you will see when Google launches its new look in May.

Google is working on an overhaul of Gmail for web which will see a new interface along with several new features, including a Confidential Mode.

As of now, it's unknown whether the feature is going to be compatible with non-gmail users.

When the update rolls out across the world, it's expected that you will be able to click a little lock icon whilst typing an email to set an "expiry date". This upgrade lets you share more photos, files and videos than ever before using the service. Snooze can be a godsend if you get a lot of emails, receive one when you don't have time to answer, and forget about it when the incoming flood pushes it off your screen. Snooze can also bring the email back when you're at a specific location, which is useful for setting aside personal email for when you get home from work.

The updated Gmail on desktop is also set to include two of the best features that are now available in Inbox by Gmail - Google's other email app. According to TechCrunch, which first broke this story, users can also request that the recipient "confirm their identity with a passcode sent via text message". The default layout highlights attachments while a "comfortable view" does away with the attachment highlight.

The redesigned Gmail for web users will be available in the coming weeks. There's also a "compact view" that is similar to Gmail's current layout for users who don't want to change.
