Fake weed in IL leaves 3 dead, dozens with 'severe bleeding'

By Ashley Burr

Fake marijuana, also called synthetic cannabinoids, contains man-made chemicals that produce a high similar to marijuana.

The deaths all happened in the state of IL but four other states have reported cases.

The New York State Department of Health has issued a statewide health advisory to hospitals, emergency departments, and urgent care centers following severe and life-threatening bleeding cases reported in Illinois, Maryland, Wisconsin, Indiana and Missouri, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced on Monday.

There are now cases in at least 12 IL communities including Chicago, Cook County, Dupage County, Fulton County, Kane County, Kankakee County, Mason County, McLean County, Peoria County, Tazewell County, Will County and Woodford county. The treatment being used on patients includes vitamin K, which is an antidote to brodifacoum.

"This bleeding is not expected, at least in such a significant population so quickly". The products are up to 100 times more potent than the active ingredient in marijuana and severe reactions have included seizures, coma and delirium.

Synthetic cannabinoids are human-made chemicals that are sprayed on plant materials that can be smoked, or sold as a liquid that can be consumed in an e-cigarette.

In Argentina, medical cannabis use is legal for patients, yet recreational use of the drug remains illegal.

Standing before a judge, every police officer involved gave the same excuse, that the drugs had been "eaten by mice".

Users have reported a wide range of symptoms, from bleeding gums and bloody noses to blood in the urine.

As part of the advisory, health care providers are urged to watch for severe bleeding unrelated to an injury, or bleeding without another explanation and with a possible history of synthetic marijuana use. There should have been 6,000 kilograms stored in the police warehouse, but only 5,460 could be accounted for.
