Drunk, drugged and possibly on the run: The Hart family's final

Summer Grant death court case

The body of a young child has been discovered along a Northern Calfornia river by teams searching for a missing family whose SUV crashed into the rain-swollen waterway last week, authorities said Friday.

Sandeep and Soumya Thottapilly - along with their children Siddhant, 12, and Saachi, 9 - had been driving from Portland, Oregon, to their home in Santa Clarita, California, north of Los Angeles, according to the San Jose Police Department.

The Mendocino County Coroner's office recovered the body on Friday about seven miles south of where the SUV was seen entering the rain-swollen river.

Three children remain missing and so many questions persist in the mystery of how the Hart family's SUV ended up at the bottom of a 100-foot Mendocino, County, California, cliff. On their return on April 5, they spoke of plans to stop and visit relatives in San Jose the following day, the San Jose Police Department said in a statement. Various personal items that the family was carrying during their vacation were also found.

There had been reports of abuse in the past, and neighbor Bruce DeKalb says he heard firsthand from the children allegations that the mothers were withholding food and mistreating the children, who the Harts adopted in Texas. Five bodies were found March 26 near Mendocino, a few days after Washington state authorities began investigating the Harts for possible child neglect, but three of their children were not immediately recovered from the scene along the shoreline.

The vehicle itself and the four members of the Thottapilly family have not been recovered from the Eel River, which remains too risky for divers to enter, but searchers along the banks located numerous items consistent with a Honda vehicle and interior, and items consistent with a family traveling on vacation, the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.

Anxious acquaintances and relatives shared information online about the Thottapilly family, their smiling faces beaming out from missing persons posters.

Search teams found debris and personal effects identified as belonging to the Thottapilly family on Thursday.

Between the two search days, the Swift Water Rescue Teams were able to cover approximately 12 miles of the Eel river, just north of the town of Leggett in California. The items found from the river have identified positive by the family members.

"Some of these items were consistent with a Honda vehicle".
