Bulgaria annual CPI records 2.2% inflation in March

The Wholesale Price-Indexed (WPI) inflation of the country slipped marginally to 2.47 per cent in March from 2.48 per cent reported for the previous month because of falling prices of food items, especially vegetables and pulses.

With this, the rate of inflation based on WPI Food Index consisting of "Food Articles" from Primary Articles group and "Food Product" from Manufactured Products group decreased from 0.07% in February, 2018 to (-) 0.07% in March, 2018.

"The official Wholesale Price Index (WPI) for "All Commodities" for the month of March, 2018 rose by 0.2% to 116.0 (provisional) from 115.8 (provisional) for the previous month", the notification said.

Inflation for fuel and power segment came at 4.70% in March as compared to 3.81% for the previous month.

The data disclosed that prices of food articles dipped by (-) 0.29 per cent from an acceleration of 0.88 per cent in the previous corresponding month.

Inflation in onion continued to stay high at 42.22 per cent and in potato at 43.25 per cent.

Wholesale prices climbed 2.47 percent year-over-year in March, nearly in line with February's 2.48 percent increase.

The CSO data revealed that the consumer food price index (CFPI) stood at 2.81 percent in March compared to 3.26 percent in February 2018. However, the March 2018 inflation is higher than 3.89 per cent recorded in the same month past year. Prices of pulses continued to slump for a year now, with rate of decline relatively slowing at (-) 20.58 percent in March compared to fall of (-) 24.51 percent in February and (-) 7.78 a year ago.

As per CSO data, inflation in the vegetables segment cooled to 11.7 per cent in March from 17.57 per cent in the previous month.

Two of the nine Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) members already voted to hike rates to 0.75 per cent last month, marking the first split vote since last November when rates were raised from 0.25 per cent to 0.5 per cent.

It may be recalled that WPI had come in at 5.11 per cent in March a year ago.
