Bomb kills up to five during football match in Somalia

An official tells The Associated Press that eight others were wounded in the explosion during a local match in the packed stadium in the port town of Barawe.

The improvised explosive device exploded at the second half of a semi-final game, killing five civilians and injuring more than ten people who were seated in the special guests section of the stadium. Police say a bomb blast at a stadium in southern Somalia has killed five football fans.

A month before the October bombing Mogadishu celebrated its first nighttime football match in decades, with many residents calling it a step forward in a fragile recovery from decades of violent chaos.

According to Mohamed Aden, a police officer, he said al Shabaab group was suspected of being behind the attack and put the number of dead at four and wounded at 12. "The bomb looked like a remotely controlled one that was planted there", Aden told Reuters from Barawe.

The U.S. Mission in Somalia said the horrific incident shows desperate attempts by the terror group al-Shabab to instill fear in the youth who are enjoying their lives.

Barawe, a former Al-Shabaab stronghold, lies in Somalia's Lower Shabelle region, about 220 kilometers (137 miles) south of the capital, Mogadishu. "Al Shabaab is the only enemy we have", President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed said during a farewell party for Somalia's outgoing parliament speaker.
