Beating Brexit barriers: Most UK businesses want close regulatory alignment with EU

India UK brexit free trade deal

The CBI's 100-page report, called Smooth Operations, followed thousands of conversations between the lobby group and its members over six months. The EU has also rejected May's approach as cherry-picking.

In a report to be published today, it will set out some of the key post-Brexit regulatory asks relating to the energy sector, including barrier-free trade access and appropriate regulatory convergence with the EU's Internal Energy Market in a bid "to ensure the United Kingdom and the European Union can continue to trade effectively".

Last month, EU leaders left open the option for the UK to change its Brexit policy when agreeing their guidelines for the next stage of negotiations, on the future EU-UK relationship.

Based on "thousands of conversations" with United Kingdom businesses and trade associations, CBI's Smooth Operations report sets out the key "rules that will matter after the transition period", covering 23 sectors of the United Kingdom economy. The UK's export credit agency, UK Export Finance (UKEF) has almost £3bn available to support UK companies doing business in SA, as well as South African companies looking to buy British goods and services.

Neil Carberry, CBI managing director of infrastructure and people, said the report provided "unparalleled evidence" from businesses' experience that will help inform decisions during Brexit negotiations. Both sides should find a way of keeping the trade in goods frictionless.

Of the 23 United Kingdom industry and service sectors covered in the report, 18 prefer convergence or alignment for the majority of key business regulations after Brexit, according to the CBI.

The Confederation of British Industry's (CBI) Smooth Operations report seeks to inform Brexit negotiations by outlining where British businesses want to stay close to European Union rules and where they want to break away.

"Deviation from rules in one sector will have a knock-on effect on businesses in others, and divergence from rules in one part of a production process will have consequences for market access throughout entire supply chains".

The position of the former French Prime Minister makes clear that Brussels wants the United Kingdom to remain in the single market and customs union. Our expertise can be SA's expertise, and United Kingdom companies stand ready to help advance economic transformation for SA's future. "It should prevent any reduction of the key pre-Brexit standards".

The employers' group said the EU's single market "is one of the most sophisticated systems of economic rules in existence" and warned "the job of untangling 40 years of economic and regulatory integration is a mammoth one and should not be underestimated".
