Apple begins iPhone 6s production in India — Economic Times

'Make in India': iPhone 6s production to begin in few weeks; will witness lower prices

After contact manufacturer Wistron had begun assembly of iPhone SE models at its Bengaluru assembly plant past year, it's now the turn of the more high-end iPhone 6s Plus model to take its place.

A report by the Economic Times, which cites two senior industry executives, claims that Taiwanese contract manufacturer Wistron has begun a trial production run of the iPhone 6s Plus model at its Bengaluru facility in India. Now, the company has already begun the trial production of iPhone 6s Plus which was one of the best selling models in the country. The report also claims that the local production could also eventually lead to "price correction".

Though Apple has chose to assemble iPhone 6s in India, there are no plans for the company to start building their new devices in India anytime soon. Prices for locally assembled iPhone 6s Plus units will drop 5 to 7 percent, once Wistron's Bengaluru plant amps up production to satisfy the demand.

Do you think the local production of the iPhone 6s Plus will enable Apple to grow larger in the future?

This will make iPhone 6s Plus more competitive alongside devices from the likes of Samsung and OnePlus, which are popular in India as a result of their more affordable price tag. The Indian government announced a 10 percent customs duty on circuit boards, camera modules, connectors, and other parts.

"However, the price correction may not be reflected immediately since Wistron will not be able to fully meet the entire requirement of iPhone 6s Plus in India and imports from China will continue", one source added. "Eventually, as the local capacity gains scale the prices will get corrected". If Apple wants to cut down on additional cost, it will want to make parts and packaging within India as well.
