Apple: 12 People Were Arrested for Leaks in 2017

Apple in a lengthy memo posted to its internal blog said it ‘caught 29 leakers,’ last year and 12 of them were arrested

Apple warned its employees that leaking details about the latest iPhone could land them in jail.

But the irony of Apple scolding employees for leaking in a memo leaked to Bloomberg is stark, and shows that the California-based tech giant is struggling to keep their massive staff in check. Hundreds of software engineers were in attendance.

With that said, a new report from ETNews (via PhoneArena) relays that Samsung is already gearing up to begin OLED production for new iPhone models.

Warren Braunig, a partner at Keker, Van Nest & Peters who specializes in trade secret law, thinks it's unlikely the arrests were related to employees giving information to reporters.

The company said in a strongly worded memo that it had caught 29 people who leaked information previous year, and 12 of them were arrested.

Apple has made a decision to harsh on its employees who leak the information, the company had issued an internal memo regarding this notice to all the members of their firm.

The Guardian could not independently confirm the memo, and the company did not respond to a request for comment on Friday. But Apple's obsession with confidentiality and secrecy goes beyond that of most tech companies; past year, the Outline obtained a recording of an internal briefing at Apple meant to address its war on leakers.

Apple has always been obsessed with secrecy, but a new memo seems to take it to the next level. But the company has strategized well to persuade Apple loyals to pay more for newer products while appealing first-time customers with lower-priced models. Sources from multiple Apple Stores have tipped off 9to5Mac with word that in addition to AppleCare employees, external skilled labor has been brought on to cope with incoming jobs. Previous year they fired another employee for leaking details to 9to5mac.

Just before last September's special event, an employee leaked a link to the gold master of iOS 11 to the press, believing he would not be caught. Apple says that digital forensics helped identify employees who passed along confidential information about the iPhone X, iPad Pro and AirPods directly to a particular phone blog (not us, by the way). In 2017, Apple caught 29 leakers. Apple's Global Security team led the internal investigations and worked with suppliers to beef up their security. These people not only lose their jobs, they can face extreme difficulty finding employment elsewhere. "And that can become part of your personal and professional identity forever".

While they carry serious consequences, leaks are completely avoidable.

Naturally, the memo was leaked.
