All accused in 2007 Hyderabad Mecca Masjid case acquitted by special court

Mecca Masjid Blast

The case was then transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation, which filed a chargesheet. Of the eight people who were charge sheeted, Swami Aseemanand and Bharat Mohanlal Ratneshwar aka Bharat Bhai were out on bail, and three people are still in jail.

Two other accused - Sandeep V Dange and Ramchandra Kalsangra - are absconding while another accused Sunil Joshi had died. The acquittal has set off a fresh political tug of war, with leaders like Congress's Ghulam Nabi Azad, CPM's Brinda Karat and AIMIM's Asaduddin Owaisi accusing the National Investigation Agency (NIA) of failing to get victims justice.

- Today, the mask of the Congress party has been removed through this verdict. Speaking to CNN-News18, former home minister, Shivraj Patil refused to apologise. "Witnesses turned hostile in the case". "I never used the word Hindu terror", Patil said.

BJP does not comment on the judgement of the court.

Elaborate security arrangements were made at the Nampally Courts Complex where the NIA special court is located.

"People who perpetrated the attack were protected through misuse of agency (NIA)". How do you compensate those who suffered and were maligned? In a series of tweets, Owaisi said that the NIA team did not "pursue the case as expected".

The Mecca Masjid blasts have often been called the first instance of the much debated "Hindu terror" in India. After this, the matter was handed over to the NIA by the CBI in 2011. There was no admissible evidence against them.

- The prosecution has failed to prove the accused's guilt, said the defense counsel, while briefing the media.

The blast, which took place at Mecca Masjid near the iconic Charminar in Hyderabad during the Friday prayers at 1:25 pm on May 18, 2007, was caused by a cellphone-triggered pipe bomb placed near the Wuzukhana (where devotees perform ablutions) of the mosque. Later, all were acquitted by a local court for lack of evidence. "/ injuring 58 others have been acquitted by a Court here on Monday".

Last week, the court had posted April 16 as the date for pronouncing the judgement in the case. Armed personnel from various wings of the State police will be deployed and roads leading to the court will be barricaded.
