Xbox One update brings AMD Freesync support, automatic TV game mode switching

Xbox One X

Microsoft is adding support for AMD's FreeSync displays to its Xbox One X and Xbox One S consoles soon. With the recent addition of 1440p support for those who use computer monitors with their Xbox One consoles, adding in variable refresh rate on AMD Radeon FreeSync displays is a logical, and welcome next step. TVs that are coming to market this year will have the capability to enable their low-latency modes automatically.

Freesync eliminates (or helps) to get rid of tearing and stuttering while gaming, enabling the display and Xbox One to work together to create a smooth and seamless gaming experience.

Other upcoming features, some of which we already reported on, include direct sharing of screenshots and game clips to Twitter, the ability to share your controller on Mixer, and Microsoft Edge updates for the console version of the web browser. Of course, you would need to connect the console to a FreeSync compatible screen, and thus monitor. Support for AMD Freesync is coming this spring but low-latency support will not be available until a future update later in 2018, perhaps with the Redstone 5 update for Windows 10, given that Xbox platform and Windows platform software updates are aligned. There was a massive amount of news in this first installment, but two Xbox-specific update related items are worthy of highlighting. Microsoft demonstrated this during the company's Inside Xbox stream today, and the mode will switch back once a game isn't running. Microsoft says Freesync support should debut sometime in the spring, while the auto low latency feature won't arrive until later this year.
