The North East Counter Terrorism Unit said in a statement that it had received reports of "potentially malicious communications sent to individuals across the United Kingdom", and asked victims to contact their local police.
West Yorkshire Police confirmed they were investigating six reports of people receiving a vile letter encouraging people to take part in a "punish a Muslim" points-scoring game.
A Metropolitan Police spokesman said it had received two reports of letters being sent to people, one in east London and the other in the SW4 area. "Sheep follow orders and are easily led, they are allowing the white majority nations of Europe and North America to become overrun by those who would like nothing more than to do you harm and turn our democracies into Sharia-led police states".
Tell MAMA quoted the assistant chief constable of the South Yorkshire Police, Tim Forber, as saying the threatening letters were being investigated and details would be forwarded to the counter-terrorism police.
"We have told them to keep calm and to phone the police if they receive a "Punish A Muslim Day" of these letters".
TellMAMAUK wrote on its website that the letter "offers points for acts of violence against Muslims - this includes verbal abuse, the pulling of a woman's hijab or headscarf, a physical assault, and disturbingly, the use of acid as a weapon".
Asst Chief Cons Angela Williams, of West Yorkshire Police, said: "The investigation into these instances is now being co-ordinated by the North East Counter Terrorism Unit (NECTU) and these enquiries are ongoing".
West Yorkshire Police and London's Metropolitan Police are working together to "catch the person or persons responsible for this".

Liberal Democrat Councillor for Bradford Moor, Riaz Ahmed said he received the letter on Friday morning.
He said the letter was not addressed to anyone and appeared to have been "sent out randomly". It has a second-class stamp on the plain white envelope and the frank mark is Sheffield. "The investigation into these instances is now being coordinated by the North East Counter Terrorism Unit (NECTU) and these enquiries are ongoing". "It was posted yesterday", Ahmed said.
Posters advertising a proposed "Punish a Muslim Day" have been sent to addresses in West Yorkshire.
Charity Tell Mama UK, which campaigns against anti-Muslim hate crime and Islamophobia say they have had reports going into "double figures" from people who have received the letters across the UK.
'My main concern is that it could get into the hands of other disaffected people in Bradford who just need that push to act.
In a statement the organisation said: "It is essential that all letters and envelopes are kept and handled minimally to preserve evidence for the police to investigate".
