Trump Says He Needs Rick Saccone Ahead of Pennsylvania Special Election

Trump Administration Looking into Death Penalty for Drug Dealers

Trump said the country should discuss having drug dealers face the death penalty because they are responsible for thousands of deaths. "He can say all he wants, there's no way he's voting for us ever, ever ..."

But while both sides have decided that the race is worth digging deep into their pocketbooks, the fact remains that, unlike Virginia and part of Georgia where candidates also went head to head past year, this area in Pennsylvania voted solidly and overwhelmingly Republican in 2016.

He called NBC host Chuck Todd - who he's nicknamed "sleepy eyes" - a "sleeping son of a bitch" and described Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters as a "very low IQ individual".

Promoting an issue with special resonance in the mill towns of western Pennsylvania, Trump touted new steel and aluminum tariffs that he said would help areas that have lost industrial jobs for decades.

But it's not clear what effect that could have on the final outcome. "You know, we don't have a big margin".

Polls, however, have Saccone's race with the Democrat Conor Lamb in a virtual dead heat, which is why the race has drawn Trump along with millions of dollars to keep the seat in Republican hands - and prevent Democrats from coming one seat closer to potentially reclaiming control of the House.

Trump and the Republican Party have gone all-in to prevent an embarrassing defeat, one that would signal the potential for larger GOP losses in the November midterm elections.

But in classic Trump fashion, he quickly steered away from his main reason for being there.

President Trump has again called for subjecting convicted drug dealers to the death penalty.

Trump said he spoke with leaders in Asia about how they handled the drug problem. There are over 80,000 union members in the district, according to the Pennsylvania AFL-CIO. It includes parts of Allegheny, Greene, Washington, and Westmoreland counties. The new map offers several pickup opportunities for the Democrats, who now hold five of the state's 18 house seats.

The National Republican Congressional Committee also launched a television ad hitting Lamb for striking a plea deal with a drug dealer when he was a USA attorney.

Trump gave a nod to those dynamics, noting talk of Lamb as a handsome candidate. Saccone has cited support for legislation to combat the crisis.

Barbara DeFelice, a 64-year-old retiree, said she decided months ago to back Republican Rick Saccone for one reason: opposition to abortion rights.

While Trump was ostensibly in Pennsylvania for Saccone, the rally was as much about the president as it was an underperforming congressional candidate.

Trump also used the speech to double down on executing drug dealers, a solution he said has worked in China and Singapore. Trump won the 18th Congressional District outside Pittsburgh by almost 20 points.

At Sunday's Lamb rally, Cecil Roberts, the president of the United Mineworkers of America, delivered a rousing endorsement of Lamb, a noteworthy endorsement since the union sat out the 2016 election rather than back Clinton. He stressed that Lamb would protect programs such as Social Security and Medicare, according to video of the event posted on Facebook.

"Make no mistake: This race is a referendum on Trump's presidency", the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, the national group that works to elect Democrats to the House, said yesterday.

The latest Gallup polls show that just 55 per cent in the USA are in favor of the death penalty for murder - a decline from recent decades, but higher than the historic lows in the 1960s. "It's not a national election".
