Tiger Woods, Ernie Els reportedly will captain 2019 Presidents Cup

Tiger Woods and Ernie Els will captain the US and Internationals teams

Woods will lead the American team to Melbourne, Australia where he will strive to deny an Ernie Els International captained team only a second victory after the Peter Thomson led Internationals shocked the Americans and winning by nine points from the US-led Jack Nicklaus side in 1998 at Royal Melbourne.

The two players infamously went head-to-head in a play-off in the 2003 Presidents Cup after the match ended in a 17-17 tie.

Tiger Woods was an assistant captain at the 2017 Presidents Cup.

The Presidents Cup has found tremendous corporate support with Italian carmaker Alfa Romeo, Citibank and Rolex, but the matches lack a competitive balance. Woods, an American and the most accomplished and popular golfer in the past 20 years, and Els, a South African and an worldwide star, combine competitive energy and golf stature.

"The Presidents Cup is owned by the PGA Tour, but we have to be more in control", said Els.

Captains alone will not change the outcome, a position that former global captains Greg Norman and Nick Price have expressed. The Presidents Cup has been reduced to 30 matches over four days, and the format is not likely to change for the next one.

The American 42-year-old is also expected be installed as Presidents Cup captain, opposing long-time rival Ernie Els, on Tuesday (Wednesday NZT). You can sort of put eight guys out and feel you've got a good chance. "I'm part of the team, and I think that that's going to be a big thing they would try and change".

Woods takes over from Steve Stricker who led the 2017 USA Presidents Cup team to an emphatic win late previous year in New Jersey.

The announcement comes as Woods surges into outright favouritism for this week's Arnold Palmer Invitational, on the back of a second place finish at the Valspar Championship on Sunday. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the captain selections have not been announced.

Woods, who was an assistant captain last year when sidelined with back problems and will fill a similar position this year when the United States take on Europe in the Ryder Cup in France, could find himself filling the role of playing the captain in Australia. Plus, he has a leadership mentality.
