This $10000 3D-Printed Concrete House Took Only 24 Hours to Build

New Story

Affordable housing will prove critical to sheltering people around the world.

Now we can print virtually everything with 3D printers, although they do not all have social and humanitarian criteria in mind. ICON is focused on creating homes in parts of the world that don't have the economic wherewithal to house the poverty-stricken. ICON displayed how it could construct a 650-square-foot house out of cement in one day at the annual film and innovation festival known as SXSW.

The company has partnered with housing solutions nonprofit New Story.

ICON's main aim is not to just build homes fast, but make them extremely affordable as well.

"(ICON) believes, as do I, that 3D printing is going to be a method for all kinds of housing", New Story co-founder Alexandria Lafci said. The company also plans to build homes in the USA eventually. Within the office, the construction tech company plans to install air quality monitors and keep an eye on how the 3D printed structure looks and smells. And now the price to build a home is coming down. To build the house, ICON developed a mobile 3D printer called the Vulcan, which is created to operate in conditions where power isn't reliable and potable water isn't readily available - like rural El Salvador or Haiti.

There are other groups which are working on printing houses. The technology also tends to reduce waste and manual labor costs. The company claims that "It's much cheaper than the typical American home".

3D-printing has become more accessible all around the globe, however, the of adoption of any large-scale utilization of 3D-printing technology is still a challenge.

After solving the vast housing and homelessness problems that plague the Earth, Ballard hopes to use 3D printing to help humans build homes in outer space.
