Teen killed, woman hurt when package explodes at Texas home

Emergency crews on scene at a fatal explosion in east Austin on Oldfort Hill Drive

"We are looking at these incidents as being related", he said, adding that federal investigators have joined the case.

Police said the package was not delivered through the US Postal Service and suggested that it did not come through any other package delivery service.

Officials are now warning the community to be aware of suspicious packages found. Police say to not handle any suspicious package found on a front porch, but to instead call 911 so they can inspect it.

Both packages were not delivered via any mail services and both homes are those of African Americans.

Police say their investigation of deadly package bombings at two Austin homes will try to determine if a hate crime was involved because the victims in both cases were black.

The resident opened the package inside the kitchen where it exploded, killing the teenager and injuring the woman.

The FBI is helping Austin police in the investigation.

According to local CBS affiliate KBYE, the explosion took place on the 4800 block of Oldfort Hill Drive, north of E. MLK Blvd in east Austin. The woman, in her 40s, was taken to an area hospital with injuries that were not thought to be life-threatening. No one else was injured in the explosion.

Police did not identify the teenager or the woman and have not released any details about Monday's package.

Police warned the public about handling packages they are not expecting.

Manley said Monday's incident is very similar to another explosion that happened March 2, 2018 where another person was killed after finding a package on his front steps that exploded.
