Sweden, North Korea talks extended to Saturday

U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un

Trump and Moon "agreed that concrete actions, not words, will be the key to achieving permanent denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, and President Trump reiterated his intention to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un by the end of May".

All hot air they said, as the International Olympic Committee (IOC) spoke of "Peace in Motion", North and South Korean officials posed for photo opportunities together and Pyongyang hinted at possible talks with the US.

James Schoff, a former Pentagon adviser on East Asia, said Japanese officials are unnerved by Trump's unpredictability and fear that the USA could reach a deal with Kim on long-range North Korean missiles that threaten the US without addressing the shorter-range weapons that threaten Japan.

The US has made it clear that the meeting between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un would happen only if Pyongyang sticks to the promises over its missiles and nuclear programme.

Other possible summit locations include: Switzerland, the neutral nation where Kim went to school; the Joint Security Area in the demilitarized zone that divides North and South Korea; and China, which has diplomatic relations with the United States and North Korea and has hosted Kim's father, the late North Korean leader Kim Jong-il.

"Tillerson along with Mattis provided a natural break to Trump by providing alternative perspectives on the world", said Malcolm Davis, a senior analyst at the Australian Strategic Policy Institute in Canberra.

Experts say North Korea's surprising shift in attitude leaves not only South Koreans but the global community confused over its intention.

There had been speculation that Pyongyang might do so Friday, when Ri Yong Ho met Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven and Foreign Minister Margot Wallstrom, but afterwards Swedish officials said the talks would be extended into Saturday.

However, there have been no public proposals of talks by either Pyongyang or Tokyo.

However, 64.1 percent of respondents said they did not trust North Korea's sincerity in denuclearisation and having a dialogue.

In the past, that has meant Washington would have to withdraw all of its troops from South Korea, a condition no US president has been willing to consider.

"We have a very big trade deficit with them, and we protect them", Trump said Wednesday in audio obtained by the Post.

However, some on the streets of Seoul have called the South Korean government to prepare for the worst.

The meeting, if it materializes, will be the first sit-down between a North Korean leader and a serving USA president.

Details about their talks were not revealed.

If the Trump administration is successful at getting North Korea to halt its nuclear weapons programs, it could be a boost for Trump's 2020 presidential campaign, said Glen Duerr, associate professor of global students at Cedarville University. Furthermore, there are serious concerns over whether or not Pyongyang can be trusted, as North Korea has promised to never develop nukes and to give up the nukes it said it would never possess, and the rogue regime violated all of those agreements.
