Sir Tim Berners-Lee stays committed to the World Wide Web

He is also concerned that tech giants could use their dominance to stifle innovation for the next 20 years, by trampling all over any startups that dare to challenge them.

The social network, along with Google and Twitter, appeared before Congress to answer questions on the extent of Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. election.

Berners-Lee also touched on the digital divide mentioning how important, nay, vital, the internet has become in the global economy. On the web's 29th birthday, Berners-Lee warned that since power is concentrated among a small number of companies, it is "possible to weaponise the web at scale".

"But until we make internet access affordable for all, billions will continue to be denied this basic right". The responsibility-and sometimes burden-of making these decisions falls on companies that have been built to maximize profit more than to maximize social good.

"The web that many connected to years ago is not what new users will find today", Berners-Lee said in a blog post. The reality, however, is that we're still a long way off from reaching this target - in some countries, the cost of 1GB of mobile broadband remains over 20% of average monthly income. A legal or regulatory framework that accounts for social objectives may help ease those tensions. But it'll take more than inventive business models to get them online and up to speed: We'll have to support policies that bring the internet to them over community networks and/or public access. To celebrate, its inventor Sir Tim Berners-Lee penned a letter calling for "strong standards that balance the interests of both companies and online citizens".

Lastly, Berners-Lee believes there needs to be a greater discussion about the web and how it can be improved. The second myth is the idea that it's "too late now" for existing platforms to change their revenue model. Incentives could be the key to motivating new solutions, Lee concluded. I want the Web to reflect our hopes and fulfil our dreams, rather than magnify our fears and deepen our divisions.

You know who could fix the future of the internet? Even though he has been talking about the problems with the web for many years, now he seems to be saying things are at their worst as he referred to the "setbacks of the last two years". Furthermore, he lays out his desire to have more people involved from across business, tech, government, civil society, the arts, and academia in discussions around the future of the web and not those that control it. Then, he's saying we must "make the web work for people", which means dominant platforms should make an effort not to "choke" the little guy.
