In public and in private, Trump still speaks frequently of his victories 16 months ago in Democratic-leaning states like Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and MI, where working-class white voters helped propel him to victory. This is happening at the same time that the economy as a whole is booming, the jobless rate is at near-record lows, and the stock market seems to keep going up.
"He's running for reelection already", Todd stated. "You don't have a country", he said. Similarly, the United States isn't the only prosperous country with a trade deficit: England, Spain, Italy, Canada, and Australia also import more than they export.
"A strong steel and aluminum industry are vital to our national security - absolutely vital". If those materials are cheaper to buy overseas, then companies that need to manufacturer goods out of them are less likely to buy US materials. Slapping aluminum and steel imports with tariffs of this magnitude is misguided.
American steelworkers "cheered the tariffs" as a benefit for their industry.
Trump's decision to impose these tariffs - if, indeed, he actually goes through with it - would seem to mark the first real example of his populist rhetoric being turned into policy that directly contravenes Republican orthodoxy.
The Arizona Republican explained that he couldn't get re-elected in his party right now because he believes in free trade and has expressed reservations towards the president, who is a member of his party.
Flake, a frequent Trump critic, is retiring from the Senate because he said his traditional conservative views and temperament aren't accepted in the age of Trump.

President Trump has reiterated that he is not "backing down" on the tariffs.
Doing so would be fraught with both rewards and risks. An analysis by Brookings Institution previous year showed that areas that voted for Trump are more dependent on exports, which foreign countries could target in retaliation.
However, it also risks alienating Trump's still dedicated base. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) said President Donald Trump needed to be challenged by a Republican in 2020 presidential primary.
Current and former White House officials often describe the president as being preoccupied with keeping campaign promises to his loyal supporters, even if those decisions are unpopular with a broader swath of Americans.
But lawmakers fear a trade war could wipe away economic gains and leave them on shaky ground with voters in November.
