Saudis Claim to Intercept Houthi Missile on 3rd Anniversary of Yemen Campaign

As the UK Government welcomes the Saudi Crown Prince’s first official visit to London Save the Children has unveiled a life-size statue of a child outside Parliament. The bronze-like statue is a reminder of the dangers that Yemeni children face every

DRAMATIC footage has emerged showing Saudi Arabian air defence missiles being fired into the air to block an incoming attack on the capital Riyadh from Houthi rebels.

The attacks also coincided with the third anniversary of the Saudi-led coalition's intervention in Yemen's civil war.

According to Al Arabiya, seven missiles were fired at Saudi Arabia in total, three of which went towards Riyadh, two towards Jazan, and one each at Khamis Mushait and Najran. Rebel leader Abdulmalik al-Houthi said in a televised speech that the group's missile force is growing and that it enters the fourth year of the war with a "developed rocket system that can not be intercepted by the USA defense systems".

The ballistic missile attack comes on the third anniversary of the launch of a Saudi-led war on the Houthis and their allies, who hold Yemen's capital, Sanaa.

The Saudis and the Americans have accused Iran of violating a United Nations arms embargo by providing military weapons and supplies to the Houthis, including missiles.

However, interception of the missiles led to the fall of fragments on some residential areas, killing an Egyptian expatriate.

The dominant group also said it fired several other ballistic missiles on several other Saudi targets, but it did not name such targets. The cities, they said, includes, Riyadh, where at least one person was killed by shrapnel according to a statement by the Yemeni Group and Saudi Press Agency.

The multipronged attack on Sunday - targeting cities in southwestern Saudi Arabia, which is near the border with Yemen, as well as Riyadh - reflected a sharp escalation of the ongoing Houthi campaign. The United States helps Saudi-led coalition with military and intelligence assistance.

The UAE said the attacks reflected the Iran-backed Houthi militias' determination to "destabilise the region".

The UN urgently needs $350 million for humanitarian projects in Yemen, a senior agency official said on Sunday, insisting it was mere "peanuts" compared with the cost of the country's war.

The UN says living conditions in the war-scarred country have reached catastrophic levels and that 8.4 million people face imminent starvation. The report by Conflict Armament Research was dismissed by the Iranian mission to the United Nations.
