Ryan Coogler Pens Heartfelt Letter to Ava DuVernay

Wrinkle In Time

Black Panther is seeing its first competition at the box office since it opened with Ava DuVernay's A Wrinkle in Time and Coogler has written a tribute to the female director who he affectionately calls his big sister.

The Black Panther director penned a heartfelt letter to DuVernay during Wrinkle's opening day saying he was in awe watching her work on the film. "It's why I feel privileged to call her my big sister", he raved in the letter published on ESPN's website.

He couldn't go without mentioning her 2014 civil rights biopic - 'she took one of the most sought-after scripts in Hollywood and turned it into the best film about Dr. Martin Luther King that anyone will ever make'.

A film that depicts a black protagonist-in all her fury, pain, and love-is especially radical, Ford explains, because America has continually "sought to conscript. black [women] into a toolbox for the country's deliverance".

Coogler also highlighted DuVernay's passion for equality and how she made sure that women directors and creatives were hired during the creation of her TV series, Queen Sugar and her searing Netflix documentary, 13th.

'Ava is a pioneer. Ava is inclusion, equity and representation.

But he's said DuVernay played a key role in how he shaped Black Panther, as the two were working on their films at Disney at the same time, just across the hall from each other.

Usually, interviews with actors, director, etc. are held at a hotel, but when Storm Reid came to Atlanta to promote her new movie A Wrinkle in Time, we got to do the interview at a very cool location: her old Elementary school.

".My big sister inspired her crew with love and navigated the challenges of studio filmmaking, adapting a book that many people called unfilmable into a movie that explodes with hope, with love and with women warriors".

A month after Black Panther showcased black excellence in the form of a superhero movie, A Wrinkle in Time is hoping to do the same through a beloved American children's novel.
