Russian Federation expels 23 British diplomats

In response to the poisoning of a former Russian spy, UK Prime Minister Theresa May this week said there's no doubt Russia is guilty of attempted murder.

"Twenty three diplomatic staff at the British embassy in Moscow are declared persona non grata and to be expelled within a week", a foreign ministry statement said.

He was told 23 British diplomats must leave Moscow within a week.

The Foreign Ministry said Moscow's measures were a response to what it called Britain's "provocative actions and unsubstantiated accusations".

Russian Federation also said that it was withdrawing permission for Britain to operate its consulate in the northwestern city of Saint Petersburg, citing a "disparity" in the number of diplomatic missions held by the two countries.

"Russia's response doesn't change the facts of the matter - the attempted assassination of two people on British soil, for which there is no alternative conclusion other than that the Russian State was culpable", the Foreign Office said.

The response follows the expulsion of 23 Russian ambassadors earlier this week after the poisoning of ex-spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in Salisbury.

It warned London it stood ready to take further measures in the event of more "unfriendly steps".

"We will always do what is necessary to defend ourselves, our allies and our values against an attack of this sort, which is an attack not only on the United Kingdom, but upon the worldwide rules-based system on which all countries, including Russian Federation, depend for their safety and security", Bristow said.

"The origins of the nerve gas appear to be Russian, therefore the challenge has to be to the Russian government but also we and the Russian government are both signed up to an global Chemical Weapons Convention".

British police appealed Saturday for witnesses who can help investigators reconstruct the Skripals' movements in the crucial hours before they were found unconscious. They remain in critical condition and a policeman who visited their home is in serious condition.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told the Rossiya 24 TV channel on Saturday that the most likely source of the Novichok nerve toxin was Britain itself or the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Sweden or the United States.

The Swedish and Czech foreign ministers and the Slovak foreign ministry all separately rejected the Russian claim.

As the fallout from the poisoning unravels in the worldwide arena, British police are continuing their investigation into the poisoning of Mr Skripal and his daughter Yulia.

British police said there is no apparent link between the attack on Glushkov and the poisoning of the Skripals, but both have raised alarm in the West at a time when Russian Federation is increasingly assertive on the global stage and is facing investigations over alleged interference in the Donald Trump's 2016 election as US president.

Britain said the assistance in that case was not enough, and in 2016, a judge-led inquiry concluded that Mr Putin had probably approved Litvinenko's murder, something Moscow denies.
