Russia Says It Successfully Tested Its Hypersonic Missile

The firing was conducted by "a MiG-31 fighter crew of the Russian Aerospace Forces" in a predetermined area, said the ministry, adding that the test went smoothly.

In a follow-up to President Vladimir Putin's unveiling of several new nuclear super weapons last week, he Russian Defense Ministry unveiled a video clip showing a jet launching the "Kinzhal".

"Performance characteristics and time indicators of the Kinzhal high-precision airborne missile system were confirmed during the hypersonic missile launch", the ministry said.

One of the technologies Putin touted was a robotic torpedo that could hit an American port city, but Mattis said that makes no difference as Russian Federation already can target U.S. port cities with missiles.

Russian Federation says it successfully completed a test launch of the hypersonic missile President Vladimir Putin touted as an "ideal weapon" in early March.

Putin said that the country also tested a new heavy intercontinental ballistic missile, called Sarmat, with a range and number of warheads exceeding its predecessor. The missile is meant to destroy surface and waterborne targets.

Putin said then that the new weapons were developed as a response to Washington's violation of the 1972 Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty, which was signed between the USA and the Soviet Union to limit the use of missile defense systems.

Designed by the Soviets to intercept American bombers, the MiG-31 is both extremely fast and high-flying - making it an ideal launcher for Kinzhal.

Putin said Washington unilaterally withdrew from the agreement under former President George W. Bush to advance its missile technology, but Moscow has made sure that its strategic weapons can get past any modern U.S. system.
