Russia Boots 23 British Diplomats In Retaliation Against UK

The Foreign Secretary said the Kremlin's tit-for-tat expulsion of 23 British diplomats and the closures of the British consulate in St Petersburg and the British Council would only impact Vladimir Putin's compatriots. "The British side should understand that".

Russia's Foreign Ministry has warned British media will be expelled if the United Kingdom shuts down RT.

He said even the name Novichok was a "Western invention" and that Russian Federation never gave it a name.

Analysis by chief foreign correspondent Philip WilliamsYou would have to ask, "Why now"?

An election could be the answer.

Putin continues to campaign ahead of Sunday's elections, which he is expected to win.

That would ensure legitimacy and longevity, in his eyes at least.

Lithuanian Foreign Minister Linas Linkevicius told The Associated Press that the Salisbury attack was a direct challenge to Europe.

And who better to stand up to this bullying than the shirt-dispensing strongman of Russian Federation?

"Do not (try to) scare us". "Russia failed to ensure Syria destroyed its chemical weapons program". No-one has listened to us.

Security cameras are seen, and a flag flies outside the consular section of Russia's embassy in London, Britain, March 15, 2018.

Britain's Foreign Office said in a statement on Saturday that the country's National Security Council would meet early next week to consider its next steps.

Yesterday, the leaders issued their joint statement after Prime Minister Theresa May visited the scene of the attack on the former Russian spy and his daughter.

The crisis erupted after Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia were exposed to a Soviet-designed military grade nerve agent, leaving them in critical condition.

In contrast to German Chancellor Angela Merkel and US President Donald Trump who assured Mrs May they were taking her government's views seriously, President Emmanuel Macron and other French officials have declined to point a finger directly at Russian Federation.

An employee in Perm's regional administration says similar messages were sent to staff members in regional education, sports and administrative institutions.

May warned more measures could follow against Russian Federation, noting that the US-led North Atlantic Treaty Organisation alliance and the UN Security Council had discussed the attack. But Russia maintains it has never made them.

Mr Johnson said: "We have nothing against the Russians themselves".

Russian Federation is in the run-up to a presidential election on Sunday in which President Vladimir Putin, himself a former KGB spy, is expected to coast to a fourth term in the Kremlin. Trump has often muddied the conclusion of USA intelligence agencies, declaring that while Russian Federation interfered, others likely did as well.

The two governments have been locked in a war of words since Skripal, 66, and his daughter Yulia, 33, were found slumped on a park bench in the English city of Salisbury on March 4.

The Labour leader, who opposed the 2003 invasion of Iraq, added: "In my years in Parliament I have seen clear thinking in an global crisis overwhelmed by emotion and hasty judgments too many times".

Russian Federation has refused Britain's demands to explain how the nerve agent Novichok, developed by the Soviet military, was used to strike down Mr Skripal and his daughter.

Britain has expelled 23 Russian diplomats and suspended high-level contacts with Moscow due to the incident.

The expression of solidarity from the European Union came despite tensions over British preparations to quit the bloc next year.

At the same time a separate probe was opened into the mysterious death of Nikolai Glushkov, a Russian exile who was found dead at his London home this week.

British police said there is no apparent link to the attack on Glushkov and the poisoning of the Skripals.
