Reinstatement of charges against Jacob Zuma welcomed

Former South African President Jacob Zuma

Following the announcement by the National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP), Shaun Abrahams, that the National Prosecuting Authority would go ahead with prosecuting the former president of South Africa, Jacob Zuma, his legal team has quickly responded and advised that it was "likely" that they would be challenging this prosecution.

Saftu "enthusiastically" welcomed the long-overdue decision of the NPA to prosecute Zuma on 16 charges of corruption, money laundering, and racketeering in connection with the controversial multi-million-rand arms deal scandal in the late 1990s, Saftu said in a statement.

"After consideration of the matter, I'm of the view that there are reasonable prospects of a successful prosecution of Mr. Zuma on the charges listed on the indictment [against him]", NPA head Shaun Abrahams said from the capital Pretoria.

In 2009, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) charged Zuma before he ran for president.

Shaik's conviction nearly torpedoed Zuma's bid for president but the charges against him were dropped on a technicality in 2009.

"Many of you will know that through the secret agreement between the Presidency and Mr Zuma there was an agreement to pay Mr Zuma's fees".

The High Court reinstated the charges in 2016 and the Supreme Court upheld that decision last year‚ rejecting an appeal by Zuma and describing the NPA's initial decision to set aside the charges as "irrational".

The case also included those in Zuma's inner-circle.

How politicians in South Africa have reacted: Zuma's ANC acknowledged the NPA's decision and said it had confidence in the criminal justice system.

Shaik was released on medical parole in March 2009‚ after serving just over two years of his 15-year sentence.

According to prosecutors, Zuma and fellow officials received some €4.2 billion ($5 billion) in kickbacks.

"We believe that it is right to give what Jacob Zuma has always requested, which is his day in court".

It is unacceptable for the South African public to keep footing the bill for former president Jacob Zuma's "delay at all costs" legal strategy, Democratic Alliance leader Mmusi Maimane said on Saturday.
