Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ Launched: Offers More Power, Faster Networking

Upgraded Raspberry Pi 3 delivers more power and faster networking

To date, over 19 million Raspberry Pi computers have been sold.

As the name suggests, the Pi 3 B+ shares many features with the original Raspberry Pi 3 Model B, launched back in February 2016. These have found their way into in schools, homes, offices and factories all over the globe. On launch, using a Raspberry Pi 3 B+ with the official Raspbian OS offers a noticeably better experience than using a Raspberry Pi 3 on day one, partly as a result of the B+'s extra power, but also due to improvements to the Raspbian OS in the intervening years.

This model comes with slightly faster 1.4 GHz quad-core processor in comparison to the 1.2GHz processor of its predecessor.

When the first Raspberry Pi single-board computer arrived in early 2012, it triggered a revolution in how small and cheap computers could be.

If you're a bit puzzled by all this and what you may use this for, then check out https://www.hackster.io to see some of the wonderful projects others are creating. As a result, power consumption can be lower on the Model B+ for the same clock frequencies and voltages. The Raspberry Pi Foundation will be submitting the application to ICASA and approval is expected around May/June. Furthermore, the magjack port hardware supports Power over Ethernet (PoE). You'll also find improved thermal management, according to the Raspberry Pi Foundation. However, the improved power integrity of the Broadcom chip takes care of the throttling. But thanks to new packaging and a new heat spreader, it runs faster, at 1.4 GHz. Further throttling happens beyond 80 degrees, but it's very unlikely you'll ever reach such high temperatures. And similar to the Pi 3 Model B, it costs $35 - while the previous model is now on sale for $5 less through some outlets. There are no plans to discount older models or cease production until there's a clear sign demand is drying up. The Pi Foundation says it may upgrade the Raspberry Pi 1A+, presumably to a model B, sometime soon as well.
