Protestors Storm The Stage As Winner Of Crufts Is Announced

Owner Yvette Short smiles as Tease the Whippet wins “best in show” at the Cruft’s dog show in Birmingham England on March 11

The accolade made it a Crufts to remember for Emily, 33, who joined thousands of other canine lovers in descending on the West Midlands for 127th edition of the world's largest dog show.

Activists stormed the arena at the final of dog show Crufts last night - to protest extreme breeding.

A man, who was named by Crufts organisers as a protester from the animal rights group Peta, was wrestled to the ground in the middle of the show arena, the NEC in Birmingham.

Brandishing posters reading, "Crufts: Canine Eugenics", the protesters highlighted the suffering of dogs bred by humans to have grossly exaggerated features - all to meet The Kennel Club's "Breed Standards".

Owner Yvette Short, of Edinburgh, had proudly stepped up to the podium with her Best In Show victor - a two-and-a-half-year-old whippet bitch called Tease - when the commotion unfolded.

The post then goes on to list specific breeds which, it says, have been negatively impacted by "extreme breeding", including: "The "pushed-in" faces of English bulldogs and pugs make it so hard for them to breathe that many can't even enjoy the activities that dogs love, such as chasing a ball or going for walks, without struggling for air". Eyewitnesses said he was carrying a banner displaying the name of the animal rights group Peta (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals).

A Crufts spokesperson said the intruders "scared the dogs and put the safety of both dogs and people at risk in a hugely irresponsible way".

Crufts and the NEC have said they will urgently review security measures.

It said there were two intruders and named them as members of the Vegan Strike Group, an organisation which claims to fight against animal abuse.
