President Trump Set To Roll Out Plan To Combat Opioids

"You kill one person, you get the death penalty in many states or you get life in prison", Mr. Trump said at a March 10 rally in Pennsylvania. They are sending drugs to Chicago, Los Angeles, and to NY.

The plan includes three main pieces: reducing the over-prescription of, and demand for, opioids; cutting off the supply of illegal drugs inside the USA and crossing the country's borders; and increasing the number of treatment and recovery services available.

But White House domestic policy adviser Andrew Bremberg said Sunday that the Justice Department "will seek the death penalty against drug traffickers where it's appropriate under current law". "The opioid crisis is viewed by us at the White House as a nonpartisan problem searching for a bipartisan solution".

In addition to the first lady, several members of Trump's Cabinet are expected to attend the New Hampshire event with the President, the official said.

The plan includes a mix of efforts that advocates have been supportive of in the past, such as expanding access to the gold standard of treatment for an opioid addiction and ensuring first responders are equipped with an opioid overdose reversal drug. "So you can kill thousands of people and go to jail for 30 days", President Trump said during his speech.

Mr Trump has previously mooted the "ultimate" punishment for drug dealers, and is said to have spoken in glowing terms about the policies of deeply controversial Filipino leader Rodrigo Duterte, who has ordered extra-judicial killings of traffickers.

Congress recently appropriated $6 billion to combat the opioid epidemic, and a senior administration official told CNN that Trump's plan will lay out how the administration believes that money should be spent.

"Clearly, the death penalty, that is a very strict deterrent that would perhaps make a lot of people think twice before they committed that particular crime, but the administration also has to consider this on a case-by-case basis".

Mr. Trump's plan will likely spark pushback from Democratic lawmakers and public health professionals who say harsher penalties would invoke a failed "war on drugs" from decades past and stigmatize people in the grips of addiction. He has repeatedly said individual drug dealers are responsible for thousands of deaths. Berman said the issue would be litigated extensively and would have to be definitively decided by the U.S. Supreme Court. He won the state's 2016 Republican primary but narrowly lost in the general election to Hillary Clinton.

To reduce the number of pills prescribed, he wants 75 percent of opioid prescriptions reimbursed by federal health care programs to align with guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention or other "best practices" within three years, and 95 percent within five years.

"We call it the "crisis next door" because everyone knows someone", Conway told reporters Sunday night.

The new plan appeared in some ways reminiscent of the president's much-ballyhooed infrastructure plan unveiled this year, which called mainly for state and private funding for major projects. "This is no longer somebody else's community, somebody else's kid, somebody else's co-worker".

Few specifics were provided about the initiative, but the White House officials said it would include a nationwide goal of reducing opioid prescriptions being filled by one-third within three years.
