Police Say 54 Severed Human Hands Found In Russia 'Not Crime Related'

Initially, the fisherman saw only one hand sticking up out of the snow there, and discovered the full bag soon after.

The shocking find was made close to the city of Khabarovsk in Siberia, close to the border with China. In one image, the 54 hands lie in a haphazard pile in the snow like leathery catcher's mitts, seemingly upended from the bag; in another photo, the hands have been lined up in neat rows.

Most were hidden in a bag which was found on the ice-clad island.

The Siberian Times reported that one theory is that one gruesome theory is that the hands were axed off as a punishment for theft.

Might the hands have been severed from recently-died corpses which had been plundered for body parts - to hide the identity of victims used in this black market trade?

Investigators are so far refusing to give many details about the find. The severed hands got into the river, since they were not "disposed" in the manner prescribed by law.

The IC says it is now "carrying out checks and studying all the circumstances of this event".

It is unclear why fingerprints could not be taken from corpses and stored on computer databases.

Medical bandages and hospital-style plastic shoe covers were found next to the remains, according to Siberian Times.

The Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation confirmed in a statement reported by local news sites that the hands were "not of criminal origin", and said it was investigating the case.

'... the biological items (human hands) do not have criminal background...? This led to the speculation that the hands were probably cut off dead bodies in a medical institution.

Another was that it could be the work of the Yakuza, a transnational organised crime syndicate originating in Japan, or a Chinese mafia gang.
