Peru president tenders resignation on eve of impeachment vote, sources claim

Kuczynski resigned a day prior to an impeachment vote.

Kuczynski's decision to step down came as Popular Force lawmakers continued to release secret recordings that appeared to show his allies offering an opposition congressman lucrative public work contracts in exchange for political support.

He has denied wrongdoing but said on Wednesday that he did not want to be an obstacle to the country's development.

"The opposition has tried to paint me as a corrupt person and they have managed to influence a group of reasonable and honest workers around me, getting them unfairly involved in this plot to destroy the government", he said.

Mr. Kuczynski was expected.

He presented his resignation letter to the Congress on Wednesday, according to the local media.

Opposition lawmakers have accused Mr Kuczynski of lying to hide his ties to Odebrecht, a Brazilian construction firm under fire for a widespread corruption scandal. Peruvian time and Peru Reports will update this breaking news story with quotes from the now former President.

Kuczynski had resisted resigning since December, when the opposition party Popular Force - led by his defeated campaign rival Keiki Fujimori - revealed his financial connections to a company at the center of a massive graft scandal.

Mr Kuczynski had to leave office not so much due to the actual accusations. The same year, former President Inacio Lula Da Silva, considered one of Latin America's political darlings during his tenure between 2003 and 2011, was accused of obstructing justice with respect to Lava Jato.

In his speech, Kuczynski said there will be an orderly and constitutional transition of power.

Kuczynski had sent a formal invitation to the Bolivarian administrator, President Nicolas Maduro, before revoking it last month, despite threats of boycott from Venezuelan allies such as Nicaragua and San Vincent and the Grenadines.

If congress accepts the resignation, power would transfer to Vice President Martin Vizcarra, who is serving as Peru's ambassador to Canada.
