Older Turpin Children Released From Hospital, Now Living In Rural California Home

FAcebook page for David Louise Turpin

The newly freed siblings - who are now adults - were discretely whisked away Thursday from the Corona Regional Medical Center, where they had been nursed back to health after police rescued them in January.

The older siblings were released from the hospital last week and are living together in a home under state care, ABC News reports. The siblings apparently picked citrus and later made themselves Mexican food and ice cream sundaes, which were all firsts for them. The children are described as warm and charming to people who interacted with them as they continue adjusting to the outside world. The attorney for the adult siblings says they've communicated with their younger brothers and sisters through Skype, and they all hope to have a reunion soon.

Now, Osborn says they're experiencing these comforts for the first time and are "full of joy about their life". "They want to hear what's going on with you and me and my family", Osborn said.

The siblings, ages 18 to 29, aren't dwelling on anger but on their recovery and the things they'll now get to experience, Osborn said. They've pleaded not guilty to charges of child abuse, torture and are being held on $12 million bail.

Authorities said the abuse was so long-running the children's growth was stunted.

Since their release, they have also been watching a slew of movies and love everything associated with the "Star Wars" franchise, Osborne said.

Thirty-eight charges were filed by California prosecutors in January against the Turpin family parents, including 12 counts of torture, 12 counts of false imprisonment, seven counts of abuse of a dependent adult and six counts of child abuse.

Seven of the 13 siblings held captive for years in abhorrent conditions by David and Louise Turpin were released from the hospital this past week in what their attorney describes as their first birth into the real world. "The victims appeared to be malnourished and very dirty". Trips in a vehicle at all seemed to be a rarity, Osborn said. "They love fruit, pasta and soup", he added. Osborn told ABC News that one had joked about needing to wear a football helmet for safety if he ever drove.

"Some asked whether they could be nurses without having to give injections or seeing much blood", Osborn said.

Neighbors said that the Turpin children mostly kept to themselves and indoors. She called 911 from a deactivated cellphone she found in the house.

While several of them have been of driving age for about a decade, their lawyer says none has ever driven a vehicle.

"Victims in these kinds of cases, they tell their story", he said.
